Tigers win streak ends at 16

It took top-ranked (4A) Marist Catholic of Eugene to end the Tigers' girls volleyball 16-game winning streak at last weekend's Seaside Tournament. Going 5-1 against 4A schools, Clatskanie, the only 2A school in the tournament, defeated Washougal, Banks, North Bend, Century and split with Caitlin Gable before falling in the championship to Marist Catholic (12-25, 17-25). "The scores don't quite reflect the competitiveness and excitement of the match which was full of long rallies, outstanding defense, and all-out hustle plays on both sides," said Head Coach Amanda Baker.

"[I'm] so proud of this team and how much they have grown this season. We went into this tournament looking for a challenge, seeking to learn and prep for postseason, and came out top two. We rose to the challenges and have [a] clear picture of what it'll take to reach our postseason goals."

Junior Lacey Willis had 51 kills, 36 digs, five blocks, and five saves on the day, and senior Joey Sizemore had 39 kills, 33 digs, six blocks, seven aces, and four saves. Senior Mya Jensen managed 26 kills, 22 digs, and 10 aces, and junior setter Addy Compton had 113 assists, 38 digs, four kills, and three saves. Sophomore Jadynce Black, who has "stepped in" since the team lost junior Peyton Krueger to a knee injury last week, had six kills and four digs during the tournament.

Prior to the tournament, the Tigers swept visiting Gaston (25-6, 25-18, 25-16) on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Willis led the Tigers with 13 kills and two blocks, while Sizemore managed 11 digs, 10 kills, two aces, and a block. Representing the team as libero, junior McKinsey Doyle led the tigers with 13 digs. Compton led the girls with 26 assists and managed four digs, two aces, and two kills. " Serve/recieve was our focus tonight, and we surpassed our goal with [a] pass rating of 2.36," said Baker following the victory.

Finally, the girls started the busy week with a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-11, 25-11) of Aloha's Faith Bible Christian. Willis led the girls with nine kills and two blocks, and Compton led with 26 assists. Doyle led the team with 14 digs, and Sizemore and Jensen rounded out the field with eight kills apiece.

Clatskanie (19-2) looked to get back to its winning ways Tuesday at Knappa. The game's results were not available at the time of press. The girls return home Thursday, Oct. 16 to take on Columbia Christian at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Portland Christian Friday to close out the regular season.
