Band program more than just music

No matter what school you go to, band is one of those electives that stands out. It's a place where music, teamwork, and creativity come together. While some schools have large, specialized band programs, Clatskanie High School, from pep band tunes to smooth jazz has one single, hard working group that does it all.

This year, the Clatskanie High School band is comprised of 14 members who bring a mix of new faces and experienced musicians. Despite its small size, the group brings big energy to every performance. The members kicked off their season with their first pep band event on Sept. 12 and followed up with another pep performance and their first jazz showcase by the end of the month.

However, being in band isn't all fun and games. Many students feel their efforts often go unnoticed. Band funding is limited, and concerts don't always draw large crowds. Still, students continue to sign up year after year. Why? Because, as research shows, being in band has major benefits for both the brain and the body.

Musical training strengthens memory, language skills, and multitasking abilities. Performing early in the day can also boost mood and focus - something band students know firsthand. Playing an instrument requires reading music, maintaining rhythm and pitch, watching the director, and blending with others all at once.

Band also builds confidence. Sophomore Graham Freker said, "Band makes me feel more comfortable getting up and presenting or doing other such tasks in front of people." Performing regularly helps students develop comfort in front of audiences, and the welcoming environment of the band room makes it a space where everyone can belong.

Clatskanie's band may be small, but its impact is not. The students behind the music put in countless hours for the sake of their art and their community. So, the next time you see a concert poster or hear the pep band playing at a game, take a moment to show your support. You'll get great live music, and you'll be cheering on a group of students who give their all one note at a time.
