Clatskanie girls volleyball ends regular season as district champs

After being swept in three sets by Portland Christian, the Clatskanie girls volleyball team won its final two matches to end the regular season as district champions. The first win came at home against Gaston on Friday, Oct. 24, as the Tigers swept the Greyhounds in three straight sets (25-23, 25-14, 25-15) in a #2 vs #3 district playoff match. Senior Joey Sizemore led the team in kills with 20 and co-led the team in blocks with junior Lacey Willis as the pair managed one apiece. Willis also contributed 15 kills and four digs. Junior Addy Compton led the team in assists with 36 and aces with four. Compton also contributed nine digs, and senior Mya Jensen managed to pull off six kills. Junior McKinsey Doyle led the team with 11 kills, and junior Olivia George added three kills and three digs to round out the stats.

The following night, the Tigers avenged their Oct. 17 loss to Portland Christian with a sweep of their own (25-19, 25-21, 25-21), guaranteeing themselves a home match for the first round when state tournament play begins. "We showed up hungry for this win, played with confidence, and executed the game plan," said Head Coach Amanda Baker, who, along with Portland Christian's head coach, won co-coach of the year.

Sizemore and Willis led the team in kills with 16 each, while Sizemore's three blocks, nine digs, and three aces led the team as well. Willis also added eight digs and a save, while George got five kills and four digs and Jensen ended with two kills and two aces. Baker wasn't the only one leaving with hardware to conclude the regular season. Sizemore, Willis, Compton, and Doyle earned All League First Team honors. George received honorable mention. The Tigers' first-round opponent had not been announced at the time of press. The results of the team's first-round match will be included in next week's edition of The Wahkiakum County Eagle.
