Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Changeover now official with name change

For the first time in over 60 years, your local newspaper has a new name. When new owner Brian Fleming took over The Wahkiakum County Eagle in mid-January, his first course of action in making the transition official was to change the paper’s name. Seeing everything his publication is covering not only in Washington’s Wahkiakum, Pacific, and Cowlitz counties but Oregon’s Columbia County as well, Fleming felt it would only be appropriate to “retire” the masthead and simply have it become “The Eagle.”

“The Wahkiakum County Eagle has weathered the storm of newspaper consolidation and closures in a way that few have,” said Fleming. “Although small in size, we have been able to remain relevant because of the strong support we receive from our community. Many of our neighbors have not been so lucky. Their papers have died, or worse, become flaccid. Never in my lifetime has there been a more crucial time for people to come together.”

With both he and his staff “setting their sights on becoming the premier source of local news in the region,” Fleming said, “The Eagle will remain fiercely independent and proudly Cathlamet based. We are committed to goodness, truth and accountability. We will continue to resist the absurdity of this rapidly evolving artificial world.”
