Westside Stories

On Feb. 26, Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services hosted a grand opening ceremony at Johnson Park Community Center, unveiling the West End Healthcare Kiosk. County Commissioner Mark Latham cut the blue ribbon to officially mark the occasion.

Attendees were given a demonstration on how the kiosk works, along with free promotional items and cake to celebrate the launch. Sponsorship from CHOICE Regional Health Network provided $2,500 worth of products to stock the machine.

The kiosks dispense free healthcare supplies, including COVID-19 test kits, other testing materials, feminine hygiene products, and harm reduction items. All items are available at no cost to the public, and you do not need to be a Wahkiakum County resident to use the service. The process is straightforward, with clear, easy-to-follow instructions displayed on the screen. Users are asked to provide basic demographic information, and the system offers a safe and secure way to access essential resources around the clock. Health and Human Services officials say they are also working to expand the variety of items available in the future.

Earlier in 2025, funding cuts forced the removal of the original kiosks. Thanks to the persistence of RN Public Health nurse Stacy Wynn, however, new kiosks in Cathlamet and at Johnson Park are now back in operation through grant funding. Although unexpected shipping delays slowed the process, Wynn remained steadfast in seeing the project through and getting the kiosks up and running.

Westend clinic hours are Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Services include vaccinations, WIC appointments, blood pressure screenings, and senior resource assistance. Additional monthly offerings include veteran resources with Alan Martinez and Employ Wahkiakum services on the fourth Thursday of each month.
