Wahkiakum High School’s track and field team had its first ever appearance at the Kelso Kickoff meet on Thursday, March 19. The meet featured 3A, 2A, and 2B schools as well. Overall, men’s varsity came in fourth out of five teams competing, while the women came in fifth out of six teams competing. In the 200m, Jayden Stoddard came in first with a time of 24.26. Stoddard also competed in the 100m, coming in third with a time of 11.89. Dane Sexton came in second in the 800m with a time of 2:32.50. Landon Mogush came in fifth in the 400m with a time of 1:05.36. In team competition, Joe Merz, Dom Diaz, Ethan Hurley, and Stoddard came in second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 49.46. In the 4x400m relay, Greighson Cunningham, Kyle Gonzales, Mogush, and Josiah Garrett came in third with a time of 4:35.10. In the 4x100m throwers relay, Gonzales, Cameron Mendez, Cor Hoogendoorn, and Hurley came in fourth with a time of 58.61. In the field, Hoogendoorn came in fifth in the shot put with a distance of 37 feet, 6 inches. Gonzales came in fifth in the discus with a personal record distance of 107 feet, 2 inches. Rounding out the men, Garrett came in fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet.
For the women, Mayleonna Casey came in first in the 800m with a time of 2:37.39. Sam DeLa Cruz came in fourth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 56.47. Clara Hogue came in fifth in the 100m with a time of 14.36. In team competition, DeLa Cruz, Casey, Hogue, and Emily Robinson came in fourth in the 4x10m relay with a time of 55.83. In the field, DeLa Cruz came in second in the triple jump with a distance of 29 feet, 8.5 inches.
The team competed at Toutle Lake on Thursday, March 26, but the results were not available at the time of press. This Thursday, April 2, the team travels to Naselle, with competition beginning at 3:30 p.m.
