On Saturday, April 18 and Saturday, April 25, the Longview Public Library (1600 Louisiana Street) will proudly be celebrating 100 years of serving the community with “a century of connection, curiosity, and culture.” Since opening its doors in 1926, the library has been a cornerstone of learning and gathering in Longview. Built as a gift to the city and shaped by generations of residents, the library has grown from its early collection of donated books into a vibrant community hub that continues to evolve with the needs of its people.
Throughout April, the library invites the community to join in a series of special events honoring this milestone. From author visits and live performances to a birthday celebration and the unveiling of a Community Children’s Quilt, these events highlight both the library’s rich history and its exciting future.
On Saturday, April 18, beginning at 2 p.m., there will be a “Children’s Illustrator Talk” by Corinna Luyken. A children’s quilt unveiling will also take place on April 18. Refreshments and cupcakes will be provided. The 100th birthday party celebration begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. Following the remarks, community members will present gifts to the library at 10:30 a.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a romance author talk with Bethany Bennett. Refreshments will be provided on April 25 as well. More similar events and activities will take place throughout the year. “Reaching 100 years is more than a milestone; it’s a reflection of a community that believes in access, learning, and connection,” said Library Director Jacob Cole. “We are deeply grateful to the generations of residents who have supported and loved this Library, and to the dedicated staff—past and present—whose passion and care have brought it to life every single day. We invite everyone to celebrate this moment with us and help shape the next chapter of this extraordinary place.”
Like many great libraries, the Longview Public Library’s story is also the community’s story, built by the people it serves and strengthened by the connections made within its walls. Over the past century, it has remained a welcoming space where ideas are shared, creativity is sparked, and lifelong learning thrives.
As the library enters its second century, it continues its mission to bring people together, provide access to knowledge, and inspire generations to come.
