In March, students at Wahkiakum High School will get to experience “The Theatre” when the Seattle Shakespeare Company comes to town. The Lady Mules have been looking forward to a rematch with Toutle Lake since the Ducks beat them 45-49 on January 14. A win would bring satisfaction and take the league title away from the Ducks, putting the Mules in first place. The players being honored this Senior Night are Samantha...

  • Mules boys set to wind up season

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 5, 2015

Three losses last week took the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team out of their final bid for post season play this year. Scores and stats are informative and interesting, but numbers aren't always an adequate way to show how much a team or its individuals have grown. Something shifted after the Christmas break and though numbers fail to show it, the boys started to fight and in those moments, they began to shine. Last Wednesday, the team traveled to Morton/White Pass and took a big hit,...

"We want to give the students an opportunity to get a taste of good fish," county Commissioner and fisherman Mike Backman said. "We're hoping to do this once a quarter or maybe once a month. We'll see how it goes and how much fish we...

  • Mules work hard but lose two

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 29, 2015

Story and photos by Diana Zimmerman There was a shift in the Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball play this week. A new determination has set in and it was in evidence with one win and two hard fought losses. The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball began to show a little fight in the second half of their game against a very physical Pe Ell team last Wednesday. The Mules came back from a big deficit, pulling within four points, but ultimately lost 52-71. Brandon Budd was back to tricks with 26 points. He...

The Lady Mules sent Winlock and Mossyrock packing this week with 18 and 14 and points to their names, respectively, and on Tuesday, they handed Morton/White Pass a 15-point loss. Last Thursday, with a tough, clean defense and 43 steals, the Mules allowed Winlock only 34 shots, sending the Cardinals to the line just one time. Despite shooting 37 percent, the Mules won easily, 66-18. "They played really good team basketball,...

David Hicks is pretty happy these days, but he almost died to get here. The youngest of eight kids, he grew up on a farm in East Valley. His dad was a manager for Crown Zellerbach and was transferred first to Seaside, then to Vernonia, later Port Angeles, finally returning home in 1974 and commuting to Portland. Except for the final posting, the farm was rented and the family moved with him. "I vividly remember being two or three years old and trying to take the styrofoam surfboard out to the...

Now it looks like there is a danger that the programs will not continue. Have you discussed it? Have you got any pro...

The Wahkiakum County Health Department is opening their doors for family planning again. The health department hasn't provided the services for several years because of reductions in funding, which has now been restored. “We’re reopening the program,” Sue Cameron, Health and Human Services Director said. “It’s not earth shattering. Most communities have them. We are focused on reducing unintended pregnancies for anybody. I realized that people were coming in for pregnancy tests and leaving w...

  • Mules lose one

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 22, 2015

Last Friday, the Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team spent much of the evening chasing Adna after being outscored by the Pirates 14 points in the second quarter. The Mules eventually lost 86-58. “We continue to get hurt on the boards on both ends,” Coach Todd Souvenir said. “It resulted in too many second chance points for Adna. Joey (Moore) had a good game on both ends, and hopefully will continue to be a threat on the offensive end in the second half of the season.” Moore led the team with 20...

Art Vik, who will be 100 years old in September, lives in a pleasant little one room house on the southeast side of Puget Island with a plump little Dachshund named Pepe. Large picture windows open up to the Columbia where he can watch the ships pass and try to divine the mysterious patterns in a flock of scaups. "I built this as a garage but I hardly ever used it," Vik said of his cosy home. "I moved it back to the barn to keep my tractors in. I didn't need it so I moved it out here and put it...

The Naselle/Grays River Valley School District will have a replacement maintenance and operations levy on the ballot coming out on January 23. The ballots are due on February 10, and the levy requires a simple majority to pass. “It’s kind of a misnomer that they call it a maintenance and operations levy,” said district Superintendent Lisa Nelson. “To me that implies painting and window washing, but it’s really maintenance of existing programs. Some districts have begun to change the language...

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 8, 2015

With little on the agenda Tuesday, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners took advantage of the open discussion period to discuss micro hydro, customer transparency and plans to repair two reservoirs in the western Wahkiakum water system. We know w...

  • New director leading Chamber

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 8, 2015

A few years ago a friend asked Shannon Gildea what she wanted to be when she grew up. "I think it would be fun to run a Chamber in a small community," she said. Not too long ago, that friend reminded her of those words and they laughed. Gildea is the new director for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Gildea grew up as a self described Air Force brat. She started her education at a private school in England and when her family moved back to the states, she was already two years ahead of her...
