  • Gallery repairs unearth relics from the past

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 25, 2014

Apparently the artists of Tsuga Gallery were not the first nor the only creative people to inhabit their building, situated between Wahkiakum County’s courthouse and Cathlamet Pharmacy. Someone was thinking outside the box when he used a fender from a 1926 Model T Ford truck to hold up a floor joist. Just who and when remain a mystery. Local car enthusiast Ray Badger came in with an old Ford catalogue to identify the fender. He took it home, cleaned it and painted it black, the only color it had...

  • Lady Mules wrestle with some expectations

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 25, 2014

For the first time in Wahkiakum High School’s history, enough girls have turned out to make up their own wrestling team. Wrestling, traditionally thought to be a sport which allows a man to measure his physical strength against another’s, is so much more. It requires a competitor to stand alone, completely present and completely honest about one’s strengths and weaknesses. It requires concentration, determination, physical and mental flexibility, toughness, and a strategic mindset. This begs...

On Friday, November 14, Sheriff Mark Howie was traveling home with his wife Debb from a Washington Sheriff and Police Chief Conference in Chelan, when he helped apprehend a disturbed and violent man. It was a rainy morning, and the Howies were headed westbound on Highway 2 in Sultan when traffic slowed to 5 mph. Soon enough, Howie would discover what was causing the disruption. A man in his mid to late 20s, looking disheveled and bloodied, was going from car...
