  • Bald Eagle Days and bull riding this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 18, 2019

COOLER--The summer heat took a break, cooled down a bit and added a splash of dampness this weekend. That's not to say it was cold though, as it was extremely humid. With lots of festivities in the works, we're hoping the skies get cleared of those dark, drippy clouds and are replaced by some blue skies and just a skiff of clouds to keep it from being too hot, with no humidity, that would be perfect! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 18-24 are Luke Schmitz, Bev Moonen, Rick Benfit, Stuart Bosch, Brian O'Connor, Frank Webb,...

WEATHER--How did this past holiday weekend treat you? I hope you had a good time with family and friends and were able to enjoy some nice weather where you were. I was happy that we had a pretty rainy day last Tuesday prior to the fireworks going off, as having a little moisture to combat the fire danger made me feel a bit more at ease. It also meant I didn't have to water the flowers and I'm sure the lawn liked the drink as well, so like a lot of us out here in the sticks, it was okay by us! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July...

  • Have a safe and happy Fourth of July

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 4, 2019

BIG HOLIDAY--It's the Fourth of July holiday! I trust you will enjoy this special day and with a little luck, we won't hear any reports of incidents due to wayward fireworks, like a grass fire or injury, as that will definitely turn your holiday fun into a nightmare. Here's hoping you have a great one, whatever you do. Happy Fourth of July, everybody! NO EXCUSES--Depending on where you are, you may get to enjoy some rather warm/hot temperatures in the days ahead. Last year, 52 children died in hot cars, and already this year, there have been...

COOLED OFF--This past Saturday morning we woke up to wet roads and wet grass and lots of clouds, so this was definitely a cool down from what many thought was going to be a "sunny and hot" weekend. However, it seems the forecast changed and the temperatures dropped enough in the evening hours so that some were even kicking on the heat, or putting that extra blanket back on the bed! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays from June 27-July 3 are Don Speranza, Cliff Garrison, Austin Luthi,...

  • Burn ban to take effect 8 a.m., Friday, June 21

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 20, 2019

NICE--Last weekend wasn't too bad, as Saturday started out with some cloudiness but by noon, the breeze blew those clouds away and the sun came out, which made for a decent day. Anytime temps are in the 70s, I'm a happy camper, as once they reach the 80s, I'm ready to hide in the house! Father's Day was the same way, and even with the clouds moving in later, we got to see the "Strawberry Moon" just over the dark cloud bank in the evening so that was pretty neat. I hear some dampness is forecast for sometime this week, so while most will not be...

  • Congratulations to the 2019 graduates

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 13, 2019

WARMED UP--We've had some wild weather recently, with last Friday being really wet, wild and windy at times, which meant falling trees on SR 4 and people's yard things getting blown all over. The pounding rain certainly did not do my flowers any good; poor things look pretty squashed now! However, this week the weather has turned on its summer switch and it's much hotter and drier, and is supposed to be so for over a week. While we shouldn't have to say this, it's already happened, so once again, if you see animals or children left unattended...

  • Flea Market sale at Fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 6, 2019

NICE--This past weekend some of the mornings were a bit cloudy and gloomy but the sun came out so all the goings on over the weekend were enjoyed in the afternoon and evening sunshine. It was a bit breezy at times, but hey, it keeps us from being too hot, right?! I hear there may be a chance of a few sprinkles in the forecast but that's going to depend on where you live, so here's to good weather if you're having some sort of outdoor activity planned this weekend. USE CAUTION--Please remember that it is extremely dry around here, so even...

  • Car show in Skamokawa at fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 30, 2019

BEGINNING--As the Memorial Weekend began, the weather was none too favorable. Thankfully, after the fog lifted on Saturday morning, we had some sunshine which suited most of us who wanted to enjoy some outdoor activities that day. I'm positive that those who were out camping were definitely enjoying the break from the rain! While we may have cloudy starts this week, they say we should be dry, so we'll hope they're right. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 30-June 5 are Justin Rainey, Benjamin McClain, Becca Keilwitz, Amy...

  • We had some crazy weather on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 23, 2019

UNEXPECTED--We certainly had a crazy weather day last Saturday and it depended on where you were as to just how violent it was. We started out the day with fairly decent weather, then we got some sun breaks and folks were posting some awesome pictures of a "straight line rainbow," which was certainly unique, so there were a lot of "that's neat" comments on Facebook about it. The bad news about that particular phenomenon, according to the weather forecasters, is that it means a storm is coming; who knew? But I have to say, while forecasters aren...

  • Great White Tail run Saturday on refuge

    Kay Chamberlain|May 16, 2019

T'WAS HOT!--As this paper came out last Thursday, we saw our temperature jump to 87 degrees in West Valley and I'm telling you, that was pretty toasty for the early part of May! We weren't the only ones dealing with warmer temperatures and several areas saw record breaking heat for that day. The following day saw us with temps hitting 90 plus; wow! However, the weekend was a different story as we saw a big dip in temperatures, so the heat was gone but it was dry and decent, so Mother's Day was still quite nice. By the time you read this, we...

  • Flea market at fair grounds this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 9, 2019

NICE OUT--As the work week began, we were enjoying the blue skies and sunshine after some morning fog. While the moisture was a bit heavy, it's the sort of combo of damp and sunny that seemingly makes the grass grow right before our eyes! Monday was quite warm and even broke some records for the date, so all your new plants definitely needed a drink. With a warm stretch possible, I certainly hope everyone is vigilant and reports anyone who appears to have somehow forgotten a child or an animal in their car! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating...

  • Mother's Day is coming up on May 12

    Kay Chamberlain|May 2, 2019

NOT BAD--We had enough sunshine to mow the lawn this past weekend, although we had a few sprinkles the next day. However, I hear that was not the case in Cathlamet on Saturday morning as it was actually raining for a bit. Funny how a few miles can mean the difference between rain gear and just a light jacket! At any rate, the threat of a deep chill had some folks really scrambling, as many had already purchased new plants during those sunny days and then suddenly found themselves faced with a frost warning. It was a nippy, frosty 27 degrees...

  • PUD meeting at Grange hall tonight at 6 p.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 25, 2019

CLOUDY START--It was a fairly gloomy Easter morning, but around midday it turned out real nice, so it was a pretty great day to celebrate Easter. Monday morning was nice as well, but it clouded up by noon and soon the drizzle started to fall. So, it looks like our forecast is still a mix of this and that. Here's to more sunny days than wet ones as we say good-bye to April and hello to May! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Kent Martin, Mike Snow, Tom Blalock, Ricky Montgomery, Robert Meyer, Debbie McClain, Kelly McC...

  • Egg hunts and Easter Bingo in Skamokawa

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 18, 2019

WET/CHANGES COMING--We have certainly had some wet and breezy days lately, which also came with some heavy squalls of hail, but thankfully, our forecasters are telling us that we're supposed to be getting some sunshine for several days. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I truly hope that's one forecast that's spot on, as these April showers are getting a bit depressing! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 18-24 are Linda Mahitka, Max Schmitz, Marie Allen, Alyssa Braman, Susan McClain Kuhn, Jeri (Terpsma) Pierce, Nancy Gran...

  • Flea Market at Fairgrounds and music at Grange Hall

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 11, 2019

WILD ONE--The end of last week saw us with a bit of everything out here, as it was sunny one minute, then blowing and raining the next, then a rainbow shown in the skies with sunshine and dark clouds and then it got dark and the thunder rolled and it hailed like crazy; a real Spring mix! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 11-17 are Logan Britt, Andrew Emlen, Brent Mahitka, Dan Keilwitz, Bryan Ledtke, Brock Cothren, Kael McKinley, Janine Helms, Chris Doumit, Mike Crouse, Sara Havens Brown, Savannah Burdick, Stephanie Olsen,...

  • April is a busy month in the Wahkiakum area

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 4, 2019

NICE ONE--I hope you were able to get out and about this past weekend as it certainly was a nice one, at least here. Some folks said they got rained on, but for a change, we were pretty dry out our way, albeit a little chilly in the early hours. With rain due our way, I hope you got some of those lawn and garden chores done while it was nice, as it's that time of year when things will be growing like mad, and hopefully that means more flowers and garden items and not just weeds! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 4-10 are Tim...

  • Temporary burn ban has been lifted

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 28, 2019

GRAY SKIES--As this work week began, our morning skies were a bit on the gloomy and gray side but at least it was just a little damp, that is until later on in the day and then it rained pretty good. It's one of those things we hate to see, but right now we really need it so I won't complain. As I'm writing this, forecasters are saying we're in for a bit of rain off and on, and given the amount of fires taking off in our county and neighboring counties recently, having some rainfall right now wouldn't hurt anybody's feelings I don't think. It's...

  • Open mic Saturday at Skamokawa Grange Hall

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 21, 2019

GORGEOUS--With blue skies and sunshine and temperatures in the 60s, it meant those with outdoor chores were in seventh heaven. Even if you didn't want to start a garden or work out in the gorgeous weather, it was definitely time to take a walk and soak in a little Vitamin D, along with some warmth, which had been missing from some of those other clear days, as we got up to the mid-70s here; wow! I hope you've enjoyed the sunny days we've had, as according to forecasters, it looks like we may have a few Spring showers by the time you read this....

  • SON breakfast, music at Duffy's for St. Paddy's Day

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 14, 2019

SUNSHINE--This past weekend started out with two of my favorite things: sunshine and no snow! With several days last week ending with very cold, freezing temperatures and a couple of mornings beginning with quite a bit of snow, it was fairly challenging to think spring would be here soon. However, as I'm getting ready to send this in, we're back to rain after a gorgeous beginning on Monday which turned to rain by evening, and the forecasters say we're in for some milder temperatures this week with some clouds, some rain but yet maybe some sun...

  • Be sure to spring ahead this Saturday before bed

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 7, 2019

WEATHER--I was happy to see some warmer temperatures at the end of last week and it was very pleasant to see some sunshine coming through the windows that was not accompanied by freezing temperatures outside! However, that all changed as the days went by and we woke up to just 22 degrees in West Valley on Sunday morning and it was down in the teens on Monday morning. I can't say that the freezing temperatures thrilled me, but that clear blue sky and bright sunshine was certainly enjoyable! With temperatures on the minus side in several areas...

  • Redmen Hall to reopen Friday with vintage fair

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 28, 2019

COLD--As this work week began, it was definitely on the nippy side with temperatures below the freezing mark this past Monday morning, but I was happy not to see any snow, as the forecast was up in the air about how far up and over this latest storm was going to hit. As of this writing anyway, we're snow free, while Portland and below were really getting hammered with the snow, which caused multiple accidents and road closures. Here's to a calm week ahead. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 28-March 6 are Taylee Britt, Audrey...

  • Three dinners set for this Saturday evening

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 21, 2019

QUIET START--As this week begins, it was just at freezing in West Valley, but other than that, this past Sunday was mostly cloudy but there were even a few sun breaks, so that was nice. I understand the weather for the end of the week may be a bit more challenging and depending on where you are, you could even have some snow or icy conditions. If we do get some nastier weather, I hope folks will slow down as many of those accidents could have been avoided if they were driving for the current conditions and not the posted speed limits, which are...

  • Crab & Oyster Feed at Norse Hall on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 14, 2019

IT'S WHITE--It depended on where you live as to how much snow you got this past Friday night and weekend, as some had half a foot or more, while some had a few inches, and some were saying they had just a "skiff" of snow and some had absolutely nothing, how lucky for them! With the snow adding up quickly in West Valley on Friday evening, the beauty of it was quickly fading when the heavy clumps started falling off the trees and onto power lines, which then slapped together and caused an outage. Freezing temperatures and outages are not a good...

  • Flea market to be held at Fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 7, 2019

WEATHER--Temperatures dropped on Sunday night and by Monday morning, we had a slight trace of snow/ice on the lawn, but that little bit was gone by eleven so we certainly didn't get any big snow storm, which was fine by me! People in higher elevations got more, and even that depended on where you were located. I know the folks in the Seattle/Everett region got quite a bit of the white stuff and it was well below freezing Monday morning, with very windy conditions, so oddly enough, they were worse off than we were, which is pretty rare. Tuesday...

  • Valentine dinner at Fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 31, 2019

NICE BEGINNING--This week began with some cool temperatures and lots of fog in West Valley, but the sun that followed was certainly enjoyed! We had the same thing at the end of last week, as Saturday was dry and decent too, so having a whole weekend dry was a big plus. However, I understand that by mid-week we will probably get wet again, so while we get lulled into almost Spring-like weather, we have to remember it is still winter, so we can't get too complacent! GREAT FEED--That nice dry evening we had this past Saturday worked out just...
