  • Valentine Diamond Dinner set for February 13

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 4, 2016

MIXTURE--At the end of last week, we saw wind, rain, heavier rain and hail, mixed up with dashes of sunshine and rainbows. It really depended on where you were at any given minute as to what you were experiencing, but it was enough to let us know that winter is still here so we should be ready for anything. I know one thing, we sure did enjoy the breaks of sunshine and the rainbows which accompanied that; the best! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 4-10 are Alyssa Montgomery, Bailey McKinley, KC Garrison, Kathy Tarabochia, Ed...

  • Crab feed was yet another great success

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 28, 2016

MIXTURE--While we had a mostly dry day last Friday, with only one fairly short burst of rain, it was definitely a drippy wet and gloomy Saturday morning around here. However, we saw quite a bit of sunshine Sunday and Monday, so that was quite nice. Considering there was a massive winter storm hitting the eastern part of the country, with record snowfall and blizzard conditions, we really couldn't complain much about our dampness at all. Besides the snow virtually closing down some cities and all public transportation, some areas along the coast...

  • Volunteers needed in new year in many areas

WET--I hope you were able to stay in during all the wet weather we had recently. Of course, if you live or traveled just a little bit east of here, it was much drier at times, which always seems so strange to have such different weather within such a short distance. However, we had plenty of the wet stuff here in West Valley and the dampness it brings just makes it seem colder than it really is, so staying cozied up inside seemed like a great plan to me this past weekend. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Jan. 21-27 are Sharon...

  • Crab feed in Rosburg set for January 23

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 14, 2016

CRISPY--As this week began, we were seeing sunshine along with very nippy temperatures as we're down in the 20's and it's white with frost which is sparkling in the sunshine, so while it's cool out, it's sure pretty. Of course, I talked to a few people who said they had the sunshine but no frost or freezing temperatures, but you know, I think we must be "special" out here in West Valley as we always seem to be colder than everybody else! By the time you read this, we're supposed to have warmed up and we might even see a good amount of rainfall,...

  • Many events planned for the coming weeks

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 7, 2016

WHITE--We had a white Christmas in West Valley this past year, but that was only because it was foggy! Not just a little foggy, but it was super thick, white fog that greeted us that day and so that made it white. Then New Year's was white too, only this time it was due to a very heavy, thick frost that blanketed the area. Now as we enjoy the beginning of this week and the first Sunday of this new year 2016, we are seeing white once again, but this time, it's actually snow that is falling all around us and the roads, trees and grass are all...

  • Happy New Year to one and all

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 31, 2015

THIS IS IT--Here we are, at the end of another year, and we will be saying goodbye to 2015 tonight! As I begin writing this column I can hardly believe this year is just about over! For those of you going out to celebrate the end of 2015 and welcome in 2016, we hope you have a fun time at your New Year's Eve celebration as well as a safe one! Forecasters, at this point in time, are predicting several nights of freezing temperatures so just in case they're right, be extra vigilant on these damp roadways, lest they be icy and super slick! Afteral...

  • Merry Christmas to one and all

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 24, 2015

WHITE OR NOT?--As this week began, we were enjoying a break from the miserable weather we'd been having, so we were all happy to see all the standing water begin to recede by Sunday evening. However, along came Monday and that enjoyment we had felt quickly subsided as a strong wind and rain event pounded many parts of our county and others. Trees were falling all over the place, from one county to the other, and that meant there were power outages and telephone outages as well. On Puget Island, one huge loss was the P.I. fire station which...

  • Bazaar at fairgrounds this Saturday, 9 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 17, 2015

LESS INTENSE--As this work week begins, the weather is a little calmer than it has been, but then, it wouldn't take much considering last week was just totally wild! With flooded roads, a tornado in Battle Ground, local roads and highways closed from water or slides, plus major highways, like I-5 in Woodland closed due to a huge slide, and Hwy 12 closed indefinitely, plus many accidents that were water related, well, it was just a ridiculous, wild and crazy weather week. There were even sand bags used on Puget Island at some homes, so the...

  • Dinner at Skamokawa Grange Hall Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 10, 2015

WET ENOUGH?--I hope you are still afloat wherever you are, as we certainly have had some rain coming down, along with some blustery moments as well. I am thinking we should move the holiday season to summertime, as it seems we have to battle a ton of weather issues every year as we plan our gatherings, or cancel our gatherings, due to nasty weather events. Ok, I know that isn't going to happen, but as you travel to and fro to all the various family doings or community doings, be extra vigilante on the roadways, as standing water can yank your...

  • Flea market will be Saturday at Fairgrounds

LAST MONTH--Here we are, the last month of the year, which seems impossible, but yet, here it is! Beings it's only 22 days until Christmas, I bet you're rushing around and getting that shopping done and getting all set for the big day. Of course, you savvy online shoppers just click a few buttons and have things delivered to your door, which certainly beats fighting all that traffic and long lines at the check out stands. But then, maybe you're like me and you like to browze around for that gift that's "just right" for that special person in...

  • Happy Thanksgiving wishes to everyone

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 26, 2015

COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...

  • Flooding season seems to be upon us

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 19, 2015

FLOODING--When I went to bed last Friday night, I was pretty sure what I was going to see in the morning--water, lots of water, and I was right, as it was even running over West Valley Road when it got light enough to see it! However, beings this is a common occurence when it rains hard around here, it is still sort of amazing to realize that one day we can see nothing but green fields with a few puddles in them and the next, we see no fields at all, only lakes! Thankfully, by Sunday morning, things had calmed down and we even saw the sun....

  • Lion's Club food drive is this Saturday, 9 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 12, 2015

PARTLY DECENT--Last weekend's weather was a mixed bag, as it was super wet and windy on Saturday down our way, while Sunday was actually pretty nice; at least until later in the day. We saw the sunshine at least and it wasn't dumping all day, so it was a huge improvement over Saturday for sure. Of course, a little further east, there was some windy conditions but the rain was much lighter than here at home, so it depended on where you were as to how nasty it was and sadly, we always seem to get the brunt of any coastal storms here in West...

  • Hooray! The highway has finally reopened

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 5, 2015

NOT NICE--We certainly ended October in a wet and wild fashion, as the rains came down, the creeks went up and between the wind and the rain, most of the leaves that were left on the trees, came down into the fields and roadways; it was not nice! As November began on Sunday, there was a ray of hope as I saw a bit of sunshine, but that was quickly replaced with more heavy downpours, more blustery winds, and some thunder and lightning just for good measure! Seemed weird to have the sun come out, although it was fairly brief, but at any rate, it...

  • Lots of Halloween events scheduled

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 29, 2015

HALF NICE--Last weekend was a mixed bag of weather for us, as Saturday turned out pretty nice after some early morning clouds and the sun looked good and felt even better after the cool start. Then Sunday came along and we were gloomy, drippy and a tadbit windy at times, and it just stayed that way all day long. It's one of those days that makes staying indoors to do those "inside chores" a little less annoying. Of course if you're a football fan, it was the perfect kind of day because you didn't have to feel guilty about just kicking back and...

  • Crafts bazaar Saturday at Methodist Church

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 22, 2015

DAMP WEEKEND--Temperatures are finally cooling off this week and it seems more like Fall after some record breaking heat last week in some parts of the Northwest, as Portland was seeing temps in the 80s. Fortunately, we were cooler than that, and the mornings were cloaked in heavy fog that brought some needed moisture to our lawns and woods. By Saturday and Sunday, we were experiencing some light rains at times, so while it wasn't dumping, it was still fairly wet and gray looking out there. However, that was mild compared to other places and...

  • Now is the time to get those flu shots

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 15, 2015

NASTY ONE--The winds blew and rains came down so heavy that our satellite went out at times, so it wasn't real pleasant here last Saturday night. We even had a mostly wet day Friday in West Valley, capped off with a power outage, which was a far cry from the weather 10 miles east, but then, we do live in Skamokawa, so you never know what you'll get! Luckily, Sunday started out the week with some sunshine after some morning clouds so at least the weekend wasn't a total bust. To end the weekend, Mother Nature splashed some dazzling colors across...

  • Columbus Day storm anniversary Monday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 8, 2015

NICE START--As this week begins, it's pretty doggone nice out there, and instead of fall, it seems like summer has returned. Of course, by the time you read this, we may be back to a cooling trend, so we'll be more normal for this time of year. Whenever we are still mowing our lawns every week in October, you know it's still pretty decent out there! The only thing I didn't enjoy about this wonderful weather was the bombardment of lady bugs and other insects, which just seemed to be everywhere! However, several forecasters are talking about the...

  • Columbia River Country Days ahead

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 1, 2015

NEW MONTH--Welcome to October, everybody! Can you believe it? It will soon be time for all the ghosts and goblins to visit us, so be sure to be stocked up on all those goodies for the little ones. Hopefully you'll bring your kids down to Skamokawa and take part in the Halloween Carnival and Haunted House at the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds; it's going to be a "spook-tacular" event, so mark that down on your calendar today! MIXED BAG--We saw some rain last Thursday night and part of Friday, which according to one report, was not supposed to have shown...

  • Ship Channel Coffee is still open at park

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 24, 2015

GREAT WEEKEND--The end of last week and the first part of the weekend was pretty nice but we had some rain move in Saturday night and Sunday morning, so things were a little damp around our area. Of course, considering the drought we've had, we'll take all the wet stuff we can get right now, as forecasters are saying that river levels are at their lowest in years and with a drier winter possibly following, this does not bode well for us in many respects. Let's hope they're wrong! Now that Fall is officially here, you'll notice more trucks out...

  • Fair premium checks ready September 26

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 17, 2015

NICE WEEKEND--We had some heavy fog in the morning hours over this past weekend and part of last week, but it turned out sunny and nice, so all of those big fund raisers got to be held without getting soaked, and the huge "End of the World Rod Run" down in Long Beach, got to travel around in mostly sunshine at least. They say we're in for cooler weather rolling in Sunday evening and more on Monday, well, we may be a little wet by the time you read this. However, as I send this in on this Tuesday morning, it may be a little cool out there but...

  • This is a busy weekend in the county

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 10, 2015

LABOR DAY WEEKEND--I trust you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. For some of the campers, it didn't start out so great, as we had quite a bit of rain from time to time but with the much needed rain helping our lawns turn from brown to green and our fire danger so high, most of us didn't mind. By the time that Monday came around, it was super nice so I hope you got to enjoy a BBQ with friends and family that day. This whole week is supposed to be warming up, so by the time the weekend...

  • Wooden boat show at marina on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 3, 2015

NEW MONTH--Here we are, into the ninth month of this year, which has certainly flown by, at least it's felt that way to me. By now, the kids are back in school, we're having to watch out for more kids at school bus stops and we need to be more aware that there will be kids traveling to school via their bicycles as well as walking, so it's definitely time to slow down. It also means Fall is almost here and our summer is coming to an end, so I hope you've been able to get all your summer chores wrapped up and you're gearing up for the darker...

  • Detour seems to be problematic

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 27, 2015

MIXED BAG--This past week has brought us a mixture of weather, with the least favorite being the smoke that descended upon us on Saturday. It almost seemed hard to believe that the smoke we were getting was from so far away, as it smelled like "fresh" smoke. Needless to say, I was happy that it wasn't close by, but I also realized if we were experiencing headaches, clogged noses and burning eyes clear over here, what were those poor folks going through over there where the fires originated? Thankfully, the winds picked up on Sunday evening and...

  • The Wahkiakum County Fair starts today, Thursday

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 20, 2015

THIS IS IT--Today, Thursday, Aug. 20 is the first day of the 107th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair, so rain or shine, it's time to head to Skamokawa and enjoy all that our county fair, with the theme: "Boots, Buckles and Barrels of Fun" and see what all it has to offer at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds! It's Senior Citizen's Day, so if you didn't already buy a pass, and you're in that "senior class," then today is the day to head down here and get in free until 4 p.m. As always, Kids' Day is on Friday and Saturday is for all military folks. All...
