MIXTURE--At the end of last week, we saw wind, rain, heavier rain and hail, mixed up with dashes of sunshine and rainbows. MIXTURE--While we had a mostly dry day last Friday, with only one fairly short burst of rain, it was definitely a drippy wet and gloomy Saturday morning around here. WET--I hope you were able to stay in during all the wet weather we had recently. Of course, if you live or traveled just a little bit east of here, it was much drier at times, which always seems so strange to have such different weather within such a short distance. CRISPY--As this week began, we were seeing sunshine along with very nippy temperatures as we're down in the 20's and it's white with frost which is sparkling in the sunshine, so while it's cool out, it's sure pretty. WHITE--We had a white Christmas in West Valley this past year, but that was only because it was foggy! Not just a little foggy, but it was super thick, white fog that greeted us that day and so that made it white. Then New Year's was white too, only this time it was due to a very heavy, thick frost that blanketed the area. THIS IS IT--Here we are, at the end of another year, and we will be saying goodbye to 2015 tonight! As I begin writing this column I can hardly believe this year is just about over! WHITE OR NOT?--As this week began, we were enjoying a break from the miserable weather we'd been having, so we were all happy to see all the standing water begin to recede by Sunday evening. LESS INTENSE--As this work week begins, the weather is a little calmer than it has been, but then, it wouldn't take much considering last week was just totally wild! With flooded roads, a tornado in Battle Ground, local roads and highways closed from water or slides, plus major highways, like I-5 in Woodland closed due to a huge slide, and Hwy 12 closed indefinitely, plus many accidents that were water related, well, it was just a ridiculous, wild and crazy weather week. LAST MONTH--Here we are, the last month of the year, which seems impossible, but yet, here it is! Beings it's only 22 days until Christmas, I bet you're rushing around and getting that shopping done and getting all set for the big day. COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...
FLOODING--When I went to bed last Friday night, I was pretty sure what I was going to see in the morning--water, lots of water, and I was right, as it was even running over West Valley Road when it got light enough to see it! However, beings this is a common occurence when it rains hard around here, it is still sort of amazing to realize that one day we can see nothing but green fields with a few puddles in them and the next, we see no fields at all, only lakes! PARTLY DECENT--Last weekend's weather was a mixed bag, as it was super wet and windy on Saturday down our way, while Sunday was actually pretty nice; at least until later in the day. We saw the sunshine at least and it wasn't dumping all day, so it was a huge improvement over Saturday for sure. NOT NICE--We certainly ended October in a wet and wild fashion, as the rains came down, the creeks went up and between the wind and the rain, most of the leaves that were left on the trees, came down into the fields and roadways; it was not nice! HALF NICE--Last weekend was a mixed bag of weather for us, as Saturday turned out pretty nice after some early morning clouds and the sun looked good and felt even better after the cool start. DAMP WEEKEND--Temperatures are finally cooling off this week and it seems more like Fall after some record breaking heat last week in some parts of the Northwest, as Portland was seeing temps in the 80s. Fortunately, we were cooler than that, and the mornings were cloaked in heavy fog that brought some needed moisture to our lawns and woods. NASTY ONE--The winds blew and rains came down so heavy that our satellite went out at times, so it wasn't real pleasant here last Saturday night. We even had a mostly wet day Friday in West Valley, capped off with a power outage, which was a far cry from the weather 10 miles east, but then, we do live in Skamokawa, so you never know what you'll get! NICE START--As this week begins, it's pretty doggone nice out there, and instead of fall, it seems like summer has returned. Of course, by the time you read this, we may be back to a cooling trend, so we'll be more normal for this time of year. Whenever we are still mowing our lawns every week in October, you know it's still pretty decent out there! GREAT WEEKEND--The end of last week and the first part of the weekend was pretty nice but we had some rain move in Saturday night and Sunday morning, so things were a little damp around our area. Of course, considering the drought we've had, we'll take all the wet stuff we can get right now, as forecasters are saying that river levels are at their lowest in years and with a drier winter possibly following, this does not bode well for us in many respects. LABOR DAY WEEKEND--I trust you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. For some of the campers, it didn't start out so great, as we had quite a bit of rain from time to time but with the much needed rain helping our lawns turn from brown to green and our fire danger so high, most of us didn't mind. NEW MONTH--Here we are, into the ninth month of this year, which has certainly flown by, at least it's felt that way to me. MIXED BAG--This past week has brought us a mixture of weather, with the least favorite being the smoke that descended upon us on Saturday. THIS IS IT--Today, Thursday, Aug. 20 is the first day of the 107th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair, so rain or shine, it's time to head to Skamokawa and enjoy all that our county fair, with the theme: "Boots, Buckles and Barrels of Fun" and see what all it has to offer at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds!
