LAST MONTH--Here we are, the last month of the year, which seems impossible, but yet, here it is! Beings it's only 22 days until Christmas, I bet you're rushing around and getting that shopping done and getting all set for the big day. COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...
FLOODING--When I went to bed last Friday night, I was pretty sure what I was going to see in the morning--water, lots of water, and I was right, as it was even running over West Valley Road when it got light enough to see it! However, beings this is a common occurence when it rains hard around here, it is still sort of amazing to realize that one day we can see nothing but green fields with a few puddles in them and the next, we see no fields at all, only lakes! PARTLY DECENT--Last weekend's weather was a mixed bag, as it was super wet and windy on Saturday down our way, while Sunday was actually pretty nice; at least until later in the day. We saw the sunshine at least and it wasn't dumping all day, so it was a huge improvement over Saturday for sure. NOT NICE--We certainly ended October in a wet and wild fashion, as the rains came down, the creeks went up and between the wind and the rain, most of the leaves that were left on the trees, came down into the fields and roadways; it was not nice! HALF NICE--Last weekend was a mixed bag of weather for us, as Saturday turned out pretty nice after some early morning clouds and the sun looked good and felt even better after the cool start. DAMP WEEKEND--Temperatures are finally cooling off this week and it seems more like Fall after some record breaking heat last week in some parts of the Northwest, as Portland was seeing temps in the 80s. Fortunately, we were cooler than that, and the mornings were cloaked in heavy fog that brought some needed moisture to our lawns and woods. NASTY ONE--The winds blew and rains came down so heavy that our satellite went out at times, so it wasn't real pleasant here last Saturday night. We even had a mostly wet day Friday in West Valley, capped off with a power outage, which was a far cry from the weather 10 miles east, but then, we do live in Skamokawa, so you never know what you'll get! NICE START--As this week begins, it's pretty doggone nice out there, and instead of fall, it seems like summer has returned. Of course, by the time you read this, we may be back to a cooling trend, so we'll be more normal for this time of year. GREAT WEEKEND--The end of last week and the first part of the weekend was pretty nice but we had some rain move in Saturday night and Sunday morning, so things were a little damp around our area. Of course, considering the drought we've had, we'll take all the wet stuff we can get right now, as forecasters are saying that river levels are at their lowest in years and with a drier winter possibly following, this does not bode well for us in many respects. LABOR DAY WEEKEND--I trust you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. For some of the campers, it didn't start out so great, as we had quite a bit of rain from time to time but with the much needed rain helping our lawns turn from brown to green and our fire danger so high, most of us didn't mind. NEW MONTH--Here we are, into the ninth month of this year, which has certainly flown by, at least it's felt that way to me. MIXED BAG--This past week has brought us a mixture of weather, with the least favorite being the smoke that descended upon us on Saturday. THIS IS IT--Today, Thursday, Aug. 20 is the first day of the 107th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair, so rain or shine, it's time to head to Skamokawa and enjoy all that our county fair, with the theme: "Boots, Buckles and Barrels of Fun" and see what all it has to offer at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds! COOLER--Last week's cooler weather certainly made me happy, as the bright sunny days were almost getting to be annoying. I was tired of hiding from the heat and sweating when I had to venture out in it. MISERABLE--With temperatures in the triple digits around the area last week, it was just way too hot for some of us! It was great to see some clouds show up beginning on Sunday and they say we may have some cooler temperatures due this whole week, so that's fine by me. SOME DAMPNESS--We got a bit of rain last weekend; it was nice to dampen the dust for a bit. Of course, if you had hay bales in the field, that wasn't so great but hopefully you were able to get them dried out with the sunshine on Sunday. WARM ENOUGH?--If you're a heat lover, you've certainly enjoyed the last couple of weeks, as it's been pretty toasty! I'm sure the folks selling AC units and fans have been happy for the extra sales and there's sure to have been an abundance of outdoor style furniture, BBQ's and coolers sold, so that's a good thing.
