GREAT WEEKEND--The end of last week and the first part of the weekend was pretty nice but we had some rain move in Saturday night and Sunday morning, so things were a little damp around our area. Of course, considering the drought we've had, we'll take all the wet stuff we can get right now, as forecasters are saying that river levels are at their lowest in years and with a drier winter possibly following, this does not bode well for us in many respects. NICE WEEKEND--We had some heavy fog in the morning hours over this past weekend and part of last week, but it turned out sunny and nice, so all of those big fund raisers got to be held without getting soaked, and the huge "End of the World Rod Run" down in Long Beach, got to travel around in mostly sunshine at least. LABOR DAY WEEKEND--I trust you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. For some of the campers, it didn't start out so great, as we had quite a bit of rain from time to time but with the much needed rain helping our lawns turn from brown to green and our fire danger so high, most of us didn't mind. NEW MONTH--Here we are, into the ninth month of this year, which has certainly flown by, at least it's felt that way to me. MIXED BAG--This past week has brought us a mixture of weather, with the least favorite being the smoke that descended upon us on Saturday. It almost seemed hard to believe that the smoke we were getting was from so far away, as it smelled like "fresh" smoke. THIS IS IT--Today, Thursday, Aug. 20 is the first day of the 107th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair, so rain or shine, it's time to head to Skamokawa and enjoy all that our county fair, with the theme: "Boots, Buckles and Barrels of Fun" and see what all it has to offer at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds! COOLER--Last week's cooler weather certainly made me happy, as the bright sunny days were almost getting to be annoying. I was tired of hiding from the heat and sweating when I had to venture out in it. I know, the heat lovers are booing me, and I may regret wishing for rain, as once it starts, it may never stop, but for now, I was happy to see the rain that fell on Sunday. MISERABLE--With temperatures in the triple digits around the area last week, it was just way too hot for some of us! It was great to see some clouds show up beginning on Sunday and they say we may have some cooler temperatures due this whole week, so that's fine by me. Can you believe that officers in Eugene, OR responded to three cases of children being left in cars within a one hour window, and it was at a time when it was reading over 100 degrees outside, which would climb to about 120 in 15 minutes in a car? HOT ENOUGH?--I hope you had plenty of sunscreen on during the Bald Eagle Day parade and doings, as it was definitely hot and sunny! SOME DAMPNESS--We got a bit of rain last weekend; it was nice to dampen the dust for a bit. Of course, if you had hay bales in the field, that wasn't so great but hopefully you were able to get them dried out with the sunshine on Sunday. WARM ENOUGH?--If you're a heat lover, you've certainly enjoyed the last couple of weeks, as it's been pretty toasty! I'm sure the folks selling AC units and fans have been happy for the extra sales and there's sure to have been an abundance of outdoor style furniture, BBQ's and coolers sold, so that's a good thing. STILL NICE--In spite of a few spinkles late last Friday and early Saturday morning, the dampness did not last long and by afternoon on Saturday, there seemed to be no trace of the earlier showers. With dry weather causing some serious hazards, like fire danger and fish kills and no snow pack left, it's really imperative to be careful out there if you're dealing with fire in any way, and you may want to curtail some of your watering habits, etc. It looks to be a trying time ahead for those of us who are used to having an abundance of water...
STILL NICE--Once again, we have had a long stretch of nice weather, but it still depended on where you were as to how hot you were, and night time temperatures plunged to just 40 degrees Saturday night, so that was a huge dip from the daytime temperatures. TOASTY--We were back to sunny weather last weekend and several days before and after that, so I hope you had plenty of sunscreen handy! If you happened to stay at Skamokawa Vista Park this weekend, the windy conditions made for perfect kite flying opportunities. The newly installed power and water spaces along the riverfront area were being taken advantage of as well, so they were definitely a great addition to the park. WORK WEEK--At the start of this work week, it is definitely wet out there, so nobody has to go out and water the plants for a few days I guess. This dampness came on the heels of a very warm and toasty weekend, with Sunday being an especially muggy day, which just makes me wilt! NOT ALL THAT GREAT--If you lived out in West Valley, you would have found a good deal of your holiday weekend cloudy and drizzly and not quite what we hoped for or expected. While some were enjoying drier conditions and temps in the 60s, my thermometer was reading about 10 degrees cooler, so it was definitely jacket time here on Friday and Saturday. GREAT DAYS--We had a great batch of sunny, dry days for Mother's Day weekend and from all the pictures I saw and things I read, it looked like everyone was enjoying them fully. Who would have guessed that we would be sitting in 80 degree weather in early May? This week we're seeing some raindrops but if all goes well, we'll be seeing a decent weekend. BEEN SUPER--I think most of us would agree that it was a terrific weekend weather-wise and with so many things to do beginning with several "grand openings" last week, it was nice to enjoy them in the sunshine. MIX OF WEATHER--One thing about last weekend's weather, if you didn't like it one minute, it seemed to change the next, at least down this way! It was pouring in West Valley when I left our house on Saturday, but just two miles east, it was sunny and warm and I felt sort of silly in my coat and hat! BEEN NICE--I hope you were able to take advantage of the nice weather we had last weekend as it was prime time for traveling to the beach or working in the yard. It seems there were tractors and mowers running everywhere, so I know many folks were extremely busy. With the warmer weather comes the reminder about not leaving animals or children in your vehicles as even 70 to 75 degree temperatures can be lethal for them.
