  • Cornucopia of Wines Saturday at Grange hall

TOASTY--As this week begins, it's feeling pretty toasty around our area with temps in the 80's, so those who had weekend plans wound up with plenty of sunshine. This was a big difference from parts of last week, where we had thunder and lightning and raindrops the size of quarters coming down in buckets; it was pretty wild! Campers in Vista Park were soaking up the sun and enjoying this great weather, while the guys working on the tide gate by the fairgrounds were happy to see some dry weather as well. The foggy mornings at the beginning of...

GRAY--We began this week with a little grayer weather and a couple of light sprinkles. However, by the time the work week began, we may have started dry and sunny but my mid-afternoon, it got pretty doggone wet out here in West Valley. Good for the plants and the fire danger, but not so great for those outdoor chores, like putting on a new roof or tending to ones' garden. It sounds like we've got a mixed bag of weather coming this week, with some sun, some clouds and some showers, so if you've got some dry time, you'd best be taking advantage...

  • Many visitors enjoyed the county fair

GOOD AND BAD--There is an old saying around here, that if you want to plan something outdoors, don't do it at fair time, as the odds are, it will rain! Sure enough, after about a month of dry weather, it rained pretty good last Thursday on the opening day of the fair, which was really too bad. While we needed the rain, the timing couldn't have been worse, but thankfully, the hearty still came to check out the fair and we certainly thank all those who did. As this week begins, we are sunny but extemely muggy. I'm sure those camping or traveling...

  • Enjoy the 105th annual county fair

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 15, 2013

THIS IS IT!--Yes indeed, here comes the 105th annual Wahkiakum County Fair and I hope to see you and your smiling faces there as things kick off today (Thursday) at 8 a.m. with the 4-H Horse Show and Western Games starting off the festivities. The formal opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. by the flag pole. You may notice that the flag is now in a different place. Where it was before was right in the way of getting things in and out of the arena stands area, so it was moved earlier this year. My family is proud to announce that the new flag...

  • It's reunion season in Skamokawa

BIT OF A CHANGE-- We started this month on a bit cooler note and even had some sprinkles a couple of mornings, so if you were one of those people who still had hay down, I'm sure you were not happy to wake up to a couple of wet mornings. My lawn liked it, though. Last weekend saw the sun come back and it got downright warm, which made for a good time for all the events going on in our area. They included Skamokawa Fair Princess Aaliyah Montgomery's all-day fundraiser at the fairgrounds, along with the 4-H horse camp that was going on there...

  • Tribal canoe journey stops at Vista Park

COOLED OFF--As this week began, we woke up to wet pavement on Sunday morning- a big change from just clouds, sun and wind. I'm sure my lawn enjoyed the little drink. Water systems are taking a hit as people use a lot more water this time of year, but the sources are down to a trickle for some of us rural folks on springs and wells. As we head into a brand new month, don’t forget to conserve water, as many places are facing shortages. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthday this week are Sheran Parker, Jae Stewart, Nance Collupy, John L. M...

NICENESS CONTINUES--While we had some cloudy mornings and the tiniest bit of moisture a couple of times, it has not amounted to much and the sun always seems to show up in the afternoon. Last weekend had perfect weather for the Bald Eagle Day festivities as the cloud cover kept the crowd, the parade folks and all the animals at a bearable temperature, and only after the parade was over, did the sun come out to start warming things up. Everyone I talked to thought the parade was terrific and enjoyed some of the new entries, as well as those...

  • Parade, fireworks this weekend

STILL NICE--Summer weather is still here and so all those hay makers in our area have had plenty of time to get their hay in, which isn't always the case. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to get all that work done, as so often we're getting chased by the rain, and it's a great feeling to have it finished up under sunny conditions. Forecasters are saying we'll have a great weekend as well. FRIDAY NIGHT--If you want to start the weekend out right, head to the Duck Inn July 19 to enjoy live classic rock beginning at 8 p.m. It's going to...

GOOD FOURTH--The Fourth of July weekend was a long one this year, as many folks took off Friday as well as Thursday and with the weekend attached to that, it was four days of good weather and good fun. By the look of Skamokawa Vista Park, there were a whole lot of people enjoying our little gem along the Columbia. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this week are Justin Perkins, Jalynn Rainey, Megan Miller, Samantha McClain, Marietta Montgomery, Sharrell Mooers, Jerry Ledtke, Randi Curtis, Denise Parker, Sunny Manary, Janelle Seaberg,...

  • Writer urges care in the summer heat

ROUGH WEEK--As you may have noticed, I didn't have a column in last week’s paper. I was feeling lousy, and finally gave in and went to the doctor, who thought a trip to the ER right away would be a good idea. I had thought it was a stomach bug or something, so I was certainly not prepared to go to the hospital. If I'd known, I'd have had the house clean, my column written and all that good stuff done! But as luck would have it, I didn't have time to do anything at all and just wound up going in and having a very irritated gall bladder taken out...

  • Busy weekend ahead in the area

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 13, 2013

GREAT WEATHER--I know everybody was madly working in their gardens and flower beds over the weekend as we knew that the wonderful, sunny days we were enjoying wouldn't last forever. Sure enough, by the time I sent this column off Tuesday morning, it was back to the usual- dreary, wet and rainy. Hopefully the showers won't stick around too long and we'll be back in BBQ mode very soon. SAD TIMES--While the weather was great and the days seemed perfect over the weekend, there were some members of our community who suffered tragic losses in their...

HERE WE GO-- Where has the time gone? June means the end of school which includes a new batch of high school graduates accompanied by teary-eyed parents who can hardly believe their babies are now heading off to find their place in this world. This month also means that summer is here, so it'll be time to plan vacations, enjoy the picnics, family reunions and all the events that we like to do during these months. PERFECT CAR SHOW WEATHER--I also have to mention how happy I was about Saturday’s weather, as it was an absolutely perfect day for th...

NOT SO GREAT-- As I sit here on this Memorial Day, the rain is coming down in buckets and the wind is blowing and well, it's just not nice. A good deal of this Memorial Day weekend wasn't so great. It certainly wasn't the sunny, warm days that I’d hoped for with folks lying on the beach in the sun. Instead, folks had to keep the sweatshirts on and the boots and umbrellas handy. Hopefully you were in a drier spot than I was! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Christeena Lindsey, Justin Rainey, Tim Rushing, Gary E...

  • Memorial Day weekend ahead

SO – SO--I enjoyed a gorgeous Monday with lots of sunshine and blue skies. However, as the day ended, it began to pour. As I write this on Tuesday morning, it looks pretty gloomy out there and forecasters are saying there will be a mix of gray and showers this week. If you have big plans for the Memorial Day weekend, you might want to consider bringing an umbrella with you. Considering what Oklahoma and other states in the Midwest are going through with massive tornadoes ripping through the countryside, I count my blessings that we are...

  • Open mike at Oasis this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 16, 2013

CLOUDY--The beginning of this week has begun cloudy with a few sprinkles now and then, but considering we had a nice stretch of dry, warm weather, I guess we can't complain too much. If you see the sun, you'd better take advantage of it, as our spring weather forecast for this week sounds liked an off-and-on mixed bag to me! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Betty Koziel, Linda Mahitka, Masen Andersen, Marty Kuller, Mark Phillips, Donna Moody, Julie McKinley, Ellen Andersen, Tayler Stornetta, Courtney Helms, Signe...

  • Time to get ready for Mother's Day

NEW MONTH-- Here we are at the beginning of yet another month. The time is just flying by! This month starts the beginning of a super-busy time around our area, but I have to say, I feel like we've had lots of goings-on already. Having it get even busier means we'll be hopping from one thing to another faster than a frog in a frying pan! Hope you've got your running shoes on, as it's time to hustle. THIS SATURDAY-- To start the first weekend in May off, the Columbia River Kayaking group is having an Open House this Saturday at their new...

SUN HAS ARRIVED-- After a wet, windy and often cold weekend with a spattering of sunshine here and there, it looks like we finally have a few days of warmth in our region and it's sure a welcome sight. I think my old bones were about to permanently seize up from being so cold all the time, so when the sun finally showed up, all I could do was soak up the light and heat- warmth at last! I did get to soak up the sun, but it wasn't by kicking back and enjoying it, as the flower beds beckoned and so it was warmth via sweating while I yanked and...

  • It's tea time this Saturday at SJFC

DAMP--It seems that whenever my flowers bloom and are looking pretty, we get a heavy rain or hail storm or some strong winds and my poor flowers take a beating. Sure enough, that's what happened last week. My camellias were looking real nice, as was my red rhododendron, but after being pounded by the hail and tossed around by the wind this weekend, they are looking pretty sad and droopy. Even the hummingbirds would rather get some nourishment from my feeders than to deal with those soggy, droopy plants. We're hoping to see a little more sun in...

  • Busy week ahead in the county

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 11, 2013

BIG CHANGE--Last weekend was certainly a lot different from the previous one, as we were pretty much stuck in spring showers mode for a good deal of last week, with a tad bit of wind thrown in to boot. At least we didn't get the mini-tornado thing that hit parts of Pendleton and even Portland had some heavy wind damage too, so I guess having the rain wasn't so bad. With tulips in bloom, along with the daffodils, camellias and my one red rhododendren, it is looking like spring in spite of the weather, although those pounding rains did not make...

  • Illegal dippers in Skamokawa?

NICE EASTER--In spite of Easter falling in March this year, and our March weather not really known for being all that great, it just so happened that this year, the Easter weekend was absolutely gorgeous and in some places, sent new records for their temperatures clear into the 80's! I saw lots of pink skin as everyone was sporting shorts and sleeveless tops and soaking up those rays, while they mowed lawns, washed cars or went fishing on the river. It was truly an awesome few days! As of Monday evening however, I felt the light rain begin and...

  • Lions Easter egg hunt is Saturday

SPRING?--As this week began and we had some sunshine to enjoy. It was a sharp contrast to last week when Spring officially began and we were looking at snowflakes falling; that was a shocker! I'm so glad it was brief and we got into some nicer weather, which we are thoroughly enjoying, especially since a lot of the mid-western states are still getting hammered with snow and ice and other winter-like conditions, so we are quite fortunate I'd say. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 28-April 3 are Aaliyah Montgomery, Leif...

  • Spring has officially arrived

HALF NICE--I hope you all had a nice St. Patrick's Day. At least we saw some sunshine on Sunday after a miserably wet and nasty day on Saturday. Spring officially started Wednesday, but from the forecast, it looks like it's going to be a wet, cold and windy beginning with some very low snow levels. Let's hope it warms up and gets more like the Spring we want. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Makenzie Anderson, Emily Tanksley, Nova McNally, Jeri Webb Foster, Hap Anderson, Jordyn Wirkkala, Mary Dominique, Vance...

  • Celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 14, 2013

NICE/THEN WET-- Last week we had a few super sunny days after the morning fog went away here in Skamokawa. I heard lawn mowers going and saws running and hammering going on. Only part of the weekend was good though, as the rain moved in Saturday night and it was a pretty soggy Sunday. My daffodils are just about ready to bloom so I'm hoping that the warmer temperatures make those buds pop open. Unfortunately, it seems like they no sooner bloom and we either have heavy rains that pound them to ground, or a late frost that has them drooping. I’ll...

  • Don't forget to spring forward your clocks, columnist says

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 7, 2013

BRRR—The ground was covered with frost in West Valley on the first two days of this week, but with the sun coming out and shining for most of Monday, it made the cold nights bearable. However, it looks to be a wet one today (Tuesday), so I hope you're all getting to stay in as much as possible or have an umbrella handy! Having this rain isn't nearly as bad as in the Midwest and East Coast, where people are getting slammed with heavy, wet snow. I hope everyone’s family and friends in the storm’s path will stay safe, as it sounds rea...
