NICE ONE--It was great to see the sunshine return last weekend but beings those days were accompanied by freezing temperatures at night, I hope any new plants you got anxious to put in the ground wound up making it through the nippy temperatures okay. By the time you read this however, our rainy weather is supposed to have returned, so it looks like we still have to drag those umbrellas around. Of course, with more snow falling back East, and temperatures in the teens, we are certainly happy that we aren't dealing with their temperatures and...
WET AND WILD--We sure had a couple of days last week that were opposite of each other, as Friday was gorgeous and we were running around in shirt sleeves, while it was nothing but rain and wind on Saturday. By Sunday morning, the water was just going over the edges of West Valley road, so we're glad it let up when it did. As of this writing, many "lakes" are still visible as the ground is so saturated that it's not going anywhere too fast, so we'll hope for clearer skies this coming week as promised so that we get to see our "green" again!...
STORMY--It sure depended on where you were as to how good or bad it was last week. Last Friday was gorgeous here while Portland was dealing with a lot of rain. Those in the eastern part of the Columbia Gorge felt a winter blast with horrific thick, icy road conditions, while just west of Multnomah Falls, it was just wet. Last Monday it was blowing and raining here in West Valley, while it was sunny and warm in Longview, so if you travelled less than an hour in just about any direction, you were likely to find a different batch of weather....
NOT BAD--Well, after a couple of freezing nights, we're back to a drippy kind of week, which isn't too bad, as once again, we're better off than a lot of other places in the states, so we'll count our blessings. DINNER UPDATE-- Last Saturday night, the Wahkiakum Fair Board had perfect weather in which to hold their belated Valentine Diamond Dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, so with no snow, no rain and no wind, grill masters, Blair Brady and Bill Coons once again served up some terrific steaks and portabella mushrooms for the diners. While...
MIXED BAG--It's been a week of this and that for weather, as one day it's pretty dry and the next it's blowing sideways and coming down in buckets. Needless to say, when you saw the sun peek out for a few minutes, you used that opportunity to fix the leaky gutter, take out the trash or anything else that needed to be done outside, so you didn't get soaked when the "switch got flipped," as when it came down, it was nasty out there! Of course, as of this writing and in spite of all the rain, we've got no reason to complain considering what folks...
IT'S SNOW TIME!--This past week brought us a whole lot of extremely cold weather and "white" around our area as well. The snow amounts were not nearly as bad as places in Oregon, but there was enough that it certainly did mess up a lot of plans, so a lot of scheduled events had to be cancelled. From school closures to sports events, to pie socials, to Bingo and the Wahkiakum Fair Board's big Valentine Dinner and more, it was a weekend of cancellations and huge disappointments by those that work so hard to plan, clean and shop and get ready for...
CRISPY--Monday morning of this week saw a few snow flakes falling around our house but it didn't stick around long, but on Tuesday morning, the frost is so thick that it looks like it snowed, and I was told a few flakes actually showed up in a couple of places. At any rate, it looks like our arctic blast has arrived and by the time you read this, we'll supposedly have plummeted into the teens, so I do hope you've all taken the necessary precautions so as not to freeze up, as the high temperatures during the day weren't supposed to get above...
BRR--I know I shouldn't complain about the cold mornings considering the eastern half of the United States is being hammered with snow and ice and minus temperatures, but hey, it's still cold, which is definitely reflected in the ole power bill! Of course, once the ole sunshine comes out, it's half-way decent out there, especially Friday, as it was almost balmy for January! The bad part about all of this, is that it is so dry, we are officially in a drought which certainly is rare for us this time of year. I guess this rain we're having now...
BRR--Here in West Valley, we still know it's winter time as it's been freezing at night and with the fog rolling in upon us in the evening and morning hours, we wind up with "freezing fog" that definitely makes things white with frost and slick to boot, not to mention, cold! Even though the sun looks nice, you'd best not be strutting outside without a warm coat the first half of the day, as in spite of that bright orb in the sky, it's still not too warm out there. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from January 23-29 are Sharon...
WILD ONE--Last weekend was a pretty crazy one, with thunder, heavy downpours, strong winds and even a sun break or two on Saturday but pretty much a foggy, rain fest on Sunday with tree limbs coming down and horrible visibility on the roads; a good time to stay indoors. While we didn't have any major problems here, many folks to the east and west of us did and thousands lost power. However, it was perfect football watching weather if you still had power! Now they'll be taking on the San Francisco 49'ers and the fun will really begin this...
BRR--As this week begins, it is mighty cold outside and everything is sparkling with a thick white layer of frost. The forecasters assure us that this is going to be short-lived and we'll be back to rain by the time you read this and that will be fine with me. There were a few folks who woke up to frozen pipes again and no water so I'm sure they'll be more than happy to see it warm up. Considering the arctic blast that is still hanging around the Midwest and East coast, I'm grateful we're in the 20s and not in the minus 20s with a foot or more...
WET--As I begin this column covering the last week of this year, we're back to rain with some chilly nights, so with winter having officially started last Saturday, I guess that's pretty normal. Let's all remember to turn on those headlights when traveling in this gloomy, foggy weather, as it's really hard to see oncoming traffic, so let's drive defensively and do everything we can to have a safe holiday season. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from December 26-January 1 are Duncan Cruickshank, Steve Smith, Donald Cooper, Kohl...
NEXT ROUND?--We finally got over the "deep freeze" although there are still ponds and shady spots that are frozen. However, according to one forecast, we could see more freezing this week, and in some areas, even a few snow showers at the end of the week. I can't tell you how much I hope they are wrong! If you believe the Farmer's Almanac, they are saying we could have snow for several days before Christmas and during Christmas, so for all of you who would (for some reason) want a white Christmas, I'm sure you'll be cheering for snow to fall,...
COLD ENOUGH?--Holy cow, has it been cold or what?! Couple the low temperatures with winds and some snow and those temperatures really took a nose dive. Out here in West Valley, I had a reading of six degrees one early, early morning, although my thermometer on the south side of the house said, eleven degrees, but either way you look at it, it was just bitter cold out there. By the time you read this, we should be back to rain if the forecasters are correct and I hate to say it, but rain would actually look good right now, even though this...
NASTY--All I can say about this weather is "ugh!" Whether it was the freezing temperatures last week or the heavy rains and strong winds on Sunday or the off and on weather of Monday which came with wet snowflakes falling from time to time, it was all not nice. With frigid weather predicted for a week, I hope you're all bundled up and that you take extra care and precautions while traveling. As always, don't forget your four legged friends as they get cold too. This Tuesday morning brings freezing temperatures but the sunshine part of the...
NIPPY OUT THERE--This past week has been mighty cold with temperatures dropping in the low 20's in West Valley, so while the clear blue skies are welcome and the sun is shining brightly, it's not exactly warm and toasty when you step outside, brrr! The frost has been so thick at times that you could swear it snowed and even after a week of freezing temperatures and dry days, we've still got plenty of moisture in the air to cause us to have thick, heavy frost every morning. Needless to say, it's been a trying time for some of us as we...
NASTY START--As this work week began, it started out wet and windy and it didn't take long for "lakes" to show up where green grass used to be. They say we are supposed to dry up but then comes some cold temperatures, so I hope you've gotten all prepared for the winter weather. Don't forget to make sure your outside pets get extra food and a shelter of some kind to protect them. For all of us on springs and wells, we might have to start letting the water drip in order not to freeze up our houses, so it looks like the "fun" has begun for us...
COOLING OFF--The fireplaces are being stoked and the heaters are getting turned up, as we are definitely feeling some Fall temperatures in the air around here but then, I guess that's to be expected, as it is mid-November after all. While we may be back to some rain as this Tuesday morning arrives, at least we are not dealing with any serious weather conditions such as they've had in the Phillipines where thousands of lives are feared lost and towns were totally obliterated. We offer up our prayers on their behalf as they struggle with the...
ANOTHER BEGINNING--We are a week into our Thanksgiving month, and it's darker earlier than ever and we're aware that this year will soon be over; hard to believe. We began this month with quite the wind storm last Saturday and hopefully you came through it without anything major going on at your house. We need to be sure to get those winter survival kits ready as it's likely a preview of things to come. I hear the Farmer's Almanac is calling for snow the last half of December, so we need to be prepared to deal with messed up holiday plans....
NOT BAD--If it weren't for the heavy fog in the early morning hours and some of the evening hours, the days have been pretty decent lately. We had a dash of rain in the night on Saturday, so things were pretty damp Sunday morning, but with the sun coming out and brightening up the orange and yellow foilage, it looked like a pretty nice fall day. More scattered showers are expected this week after a freezing Monday evening and Tuesday morning, but hopefully they won't turn into downpours and things will be fairly dry this evening, as this is...
SUPER NICE--In spite of the foggy mornings that have us socked in solid for several hours each morning, the sunshine that follows has been just great, so I hope you've enjoyed it! The turning of the leaves made for some gorgeous shots of the foliage around the area, and the sunsets have been awesome too, so these dry, Fall days have been very enjoyable after the soaking we got in September. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 24-30 are Valle Ledtke, Hoby Thacker, Maury Mooers, Nathaniel Norris, Mel Dominique, Don Wages and Mike...
NICE--As this week began, we've had some really sunny days, which were very enjoyable. However, we started Monday morning off with temperatures below freezing and the heavy fog has made a nice layer of frost on the outside vehicles, so while the days are nice, the evenings are pretty nippy. The thick fog has hung around for several mornings and with very limited visibility, it's really essential to turn on ones' headlights so your vehicle can be more visible. CORRECTION--Unfortunately I put out some incorrect information last week regarding...
SUPER NICE--What a difference a week makes, as this weekend we had absolutely gorgeous weather, compared to the soaking we had the week before, so it was really great. The night-time temperatures were in the low 40s in West Valley, with lots of fog in the morning hours, but the sunshine that followed made it all worthwhile. With more rain due at the beginning of the work week, we can only hope that it clears up some by mid-week like they say it's going to, at least for a couple of days. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 10-16...
WET AND WILD--I'm pretty sure there's no fire danger around here anymore, as we had inches and inches of rain over the last week and now we just have to worry about mudslides and falling trees. Last weekend saw officials already dealing with power outages and trees and water over the various roadways, while fields turned into lakes. The thunder and lightning storm that descended upon us Sunday morning was enough to shake a person out of bed, so we've had some pretty wild weather, which brought record-breaking rainfall amounts to many local...
MIXED BAG--Well, this past week we've certainly had a variety of weather and some of it was great. Then came Sunday! Wow, that was quite an impressive thunder event we had and if you add a touch of lightning and a brief power outage, along with some heavy rains, it made for quite an interesting day! Looks like we're in for some cooler weather with fairly moderate temperatures for most of this week, except for Thursday (today), when temperatures are back in the summer time range. I guess we may need to keep the fans and AC units going just a...
