Southwest Washington's regional manager of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife came to Cathlamet Monday to discuss the start of a salmon net pen rearing project, and commercial fishermen used the opportunity to express their displeasure with changes to the Columbia River gillnet fishery. Following an initiative from Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, Washington's Fish and Wildlife Commission has decreed that gillnets will be moved out of the main channel of the Columbia. Officials say the goal is to reduce the by-catch of salmon from...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council handled a variety of business when they met Monday, including hearing that one of their members would resign effective May 1. Council Member Dick Swart said he would resign his position effective 12:01 a.m. May 1. He is planning to do some traveling this year. At their meeting last month, council members authorized him to take a leave of absence and return to the position in the fall, but Swart said Monday he had decided against that. "I thought it would be the best for the town if we didn't delay in gettin...

Members of the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners handled a variety of light business when they met Tuesday. The commission approved a proposal from the Tsuga Artists Association to repaint an outdoor mural at the Main Street entrance to the courthouse parking lot. The paint on the mural, which depicts sights to see in the county, is flaking off the mural surface. Association member David Goodroe said the group originally had two proposals in mind--for $1,500 members would repaint the mural close to the fashion in which it was created,...

From there, she'll contact other potential donors to continue the fundraising effort. The port plans to create a display in which viewers may see down into the boat. Port...
Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services will revise their Friday office hours starting this week. County commissioners on Tuesday approved a recommendation from Administrator Sue Cameron, who proposed closing the department's office in the Courthouse Annex on Fridays. No services would be lost, and there would be no cost savings, she said, but there would be efficiencies "gained by concentrating staff on one campus and eliminating the need to have staff travel back and forth between offices to work with the public or manage projects." Two...
Wahkiakum County dispatchers apparently didn't miss any calls for emergency assistance when CentruyLink's emergency dispatching services went down statewide last week. Joannie Bjorge, chief civil deputy in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office, and regional dispatch center administrators will get together to discuss the outage. "There's a lot of discontent in the 9-1-1 world about CenturyLink," Bjorge told the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. CenturyLink didn't notify the county that the system was down, Bjorge said;...
Spring is definitely in the air with the smell of cherry blossoms, fresh mown grass, and many of the wildflowers beginning to bloom. The dogs are shedding their winter coats, and if you brush them outside and leave the fur, the birds are in a mad rush to pick it up and carry it off. A few butterflies are even appearing, and the hummingbird feeder needs to be refilled frequently. Nature sure has a beautiful way of beginning new life in the spring. News from Naselle Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday (today), track at North...

H&HS staff area already considering how the Elochoman Campus...
Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business when they met Tuesday. The board held a public hearing to collect comment on an upgraded watershed management plan for Wahkiakum and Cowlitz counties. The Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board is leading the update of the plan, which is required by Washington's Watershed Management Act, and which has a goal of enhancing water conditions for salmon populations. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized the closure of Steamboat Slough Road for continued construction of the new setback dike on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge. When the new dike is completed, the contractor will breach the old dike in two...
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils. They are so much fun to watch, and their colors so brilliant. Country life is the only way to go, and welcome to Spring. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for...

Marijuana production opposed Changes in state law now permit growing, processing and sales of...
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson celebrated the end of the 2014 legislative session by coming to the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce crab and oyster feed last Saturday. Ferguson said the legislature sent three of the six bills his office had requested to the governor for signature. The legislature left undone the task of clarifying the mix of rules regulating the developing commercial production and sale of marijuana. Across the state there are cities and counties which would like to prohibit the cultivation and/or sale of...
Wahkiakum School District transportation supervisor Calvin Grasseth came to our office late last week with a letter to the editor. The letter speaks to the issue of drivers passing school buses which are showing the red no-passing lights while students get on or leave the bus, an act which endangers the lives of the children. In the past few months, a half dozen drivers have gone around Wahkiakum school buses which were displaying the red lights and stop paddle, Grasseth said, and he is alarmed at the trend. I've printed his letter below as a...

The highway department will team with Columbia Land Trust and the state...
I hope everyone kept their feet dry last weekend after the amount of rain and wind we ended up with. Our son and his girlfriend were here for the weekend but made an early exit on Saturday night in order to get out before we were flooded in. It didn’t last very long but was sure fast coming in. Looks like more silt building up in the pastures, and more pot holes to fill. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week include: Tuesday, the 18th-fast pitch and baseball at Ocosta at 4 p.m., Thursday, the 20th-fast p...
Local officials plan to meet next month with federal officials to go over expectations arising from the construction of a new setback dike along Steam Boat Slough Road. Wahkiakum County commissioners and Diking District Commissioner Maurice Mooers want the US Army Corps of Engineers to sign legal documents giving them ownership of the new dike and a guarantee for the repair of any damage to SteamBoat Slough Road. The Columbia River is eating into the existing dike and threatening to breach and flood the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Julia...
Residents of the Pancake Point area on Puget Island's East Sunny Sands are starting to see an old nemesis: Their beach is eroding at a fast rate that could someday threaten homes. Resident Mike Beutler approached the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to ask if county officials had followed up on conversations last fall with the US Army Corps of Engineers and Port of Portland about starting the design and permitting process to use dredge spoils to replenish the beach, as happened in 2006. "Most of the sand deposited eight years...
