Ranked third last week in the Associated Press state Class 2B football poll, the Napavine Tigers handed the Wahkiakum Mules a 39-20 defeat last Friday. The AP 2B poll almost looks like Central League standings: 1. Adna, 3. Napavine, 4. Kalama, 5. Rainier, 7. Onalaska and 9. Toledo. The score stood 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The host Tigers scored on a 13-yard pass play at 1:04, and the Mules responded with a quick series. Quentin Nelson ripped off a 58 yard run, and James Anderson scored from the two. Lucas Brown kicked the conversion...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council worked their way through an appeal of a sewer rate for a business, lifted a building moratorium and handled other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. Steve and Paige Lake, owners of the Bradley House, had appealed a town decision earlier this year to charge them a monthly rate of $276.58 based on an assessment of 2.8 equivalent customer units (ECU) because it was a residence doubling as an antique shop and bed and breakfast. The Lakes appealed, noting that they are open for antique sales very few...
Wahkiakum County commissioners reviewed the status of beach nourishment plans and handled other business when they met Tuesday. The board, acting as the commission for four flood control zone districts, is working with a consultant to obtain a 10-year plan for depositing dredge spoils on eroding beaches at Cape Horn and Puget Island. Commissioners have said permits should be in order for deposits this fall at Cape Horn, but, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers, there’s not enough volume for deposits at the other areas. Liz Beutler, a...
When can a loss in a football game make one happy? For the Wahkiakum Mules, it was their performance in a 32-27 loss to the visiting Onalaska Loggers last Friday. The Mules had suffered a 34-0 loss the previous week to Adna, a loss made worse by the severe head injury to sophomore Beau Carlson, who is making a slow recovery. And the 3-0 Loggers had outscored their first two opponents of the season 130-0. So, to lose by only five points and have a chance to win the game late in the fourth...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voted to apply for an application for a grant to study the feasibility of creating a broadband network in the county. Government entities have had a committee studying creation of a broadband network, and last week, Wahkiakum PUD agreed to lead an application for the grant. The group had suggested Wahkiakum County has appropriate funding to provide the 25 percent local match, and PUD General Manger Dave Tramblie brought that request to the board of county commissioners. The maximum amount for the grant...
Wahkiakum County commissioners plan to re-open the Elochoman Valley Road, probably in early October. Commissioners were ready Tuesday to open the road--closed last winter near milepost 7 because of potential landslide, but a request from Hancock Forest Management led to a delay. During a winter wet spell, area residents heard trees snapping on the hillside above their house, and when they investigated, they found signs of a landslide. They contacted Hancock, the landowner, and further investigation revealed the start of a major landslide with...
Wahkiakum County offices may soon have significant security upgrades. On Tuesday, county commissioners authorized sheriff's office personnel to proceed with purchase and installation of electronic door locks for offices in the courthouse and Elochoman Health and Human Services campus. Undersheriff Gary Howell and Health and Human Services Executive Director Chris Bischoff said some personnel need battery powered pendants that can activate the locks....
The Washington Department of Natural Resources and US Fish and Wildlife Service are preparing to gather input on their updated proposed amendments to their long-term conservation strategies for the marbeled murrelet. The endangered sea bird nests on large limbs in old trees anywhere within a 55-mile range of the ocean, and the agencies' plan would govern timber harvest and related activities in habitat on lands managed by the agencies, including timber trust land benefitting Wahkiakum and Pacific counties. The agencies have scheduled public...
The Adna Pirates aren't ranked first in the Associated Press Class 2B football poll for nothing: They're a good team. The Pirates took it to the Wahkiakum Mules for a 34-0 victory last Friday. The Mules had returned to the football poll after a few years of program building and went into the game ranked ninth in the AP poll. Adna scored on a long sweep play on the first play to set the tone of the game. "That put us in a hole right away," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "We gave them some good field position. Later we snapped the ball over the...
Suzanne Arnits came to the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners meeting Tuesday asking for a proclamation. She got that from the commissioners, but she also started a conversation. Arnits is an outreach coordinator for NAMI SW WA—the southwestern Washington chapter of the National Alliance For Mental Health. NAMI S...

By Rick Nelson The Wahkiakum Mule football team begins the 2018 season with one of its largest rosters in years. Even with 31 players on the squad as of Monday, this year's team is a mixture of youth and experience. "We have 31 kids turning out of which 10 are upperclassmen," Mule Coach Erick Hansen said Monday. "Of those, eight are football players (two are foreign exchange students). There are 21 freshmen and sophomores. "I'm cautiously optimistic." The Mules had five seniors on last year's roster, including two exchange students just...

Town of Cathlamet officials reported progress on a variety of issues at the monthly town council meeting on Monday. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said the town crew had found two large water leaks and repaired them. They were leaking 60,000 gallons or more per day, he said. Working with a consultant, they’ve found many other small leaks, probably caused by deteriorating band joints; Cruickshank called it “death by 1,000 cuts." Early in the summer, a major leak in a main running through the Birnie Creek channel almost drained the sys...
Commissioners of Port District 2 addressed infrastructures and staffing at their monthly meeting Tuesday at Skamokawa Vista Park. Commissioners authorized Manager Janet Bryan to obtain estimates for upgrading electric and water lines at Vista park. The electrical line serving camping loop run is no longer adequate for demand, commissioners said. The water line is also troublesome, Bryan said, and has had significant leaks. “It’s just a matter of time before the whole water line goes,” she said. With a new line, they could add additional faucets...

The department also plans to upgrade crosswalks on Main Street in Cathlamet this summer. The project includes elimination of some...
Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to send a revised version of an update of the county shoreline management plan to the county planning commission for review and recommendation. In 2017, the planning commission completed a multi-year effort to update the county’s aging original plan and recommended that the board of commissioners adopt it. However, land owners objected to the plan’s new provisions and said they feared the new plan would prohibit them from using land along streams and rivers for agriculture and other traditional uses....
Wahkiakum County is nearing the end of its two-year old effort to set up a 10-year permit for depositing dredged sand on four eroding shorelines, but county commissioners and residents learned Tuesday that there is sand for only one of the sites. US Army Corps of Engineers officials reported this past week that there is a need for Columbia River channel dredging only at Cape Horn, Public Works Director Chuck Beyer said Tuesday. Corps officials anticipate that dredging and beach nourishment will occur in early October. That means property...
