  • Cemetery District 2 audit has no findings

    The Washington State Auditor’s Office released a report on the results of an independent accountability audit of Wahkiakum Cemetery District No. 2 on February 11. The auditors examined records from January 2010 through December 2011. The objective of the audit was to evaluate the adequacy of the district’s internal controls to safeguard public resources and the district’s compliance with state law and its own policies.   • Cary recognized for service

    Cathlamet resident Dan Cary, center, recently received an Auxiliary Commandant Letter of Commendation Award from the commandant of the 13th Coast Guard District. The award recognizes Cary as a volunteer who has served the past year as a fishing vessel dockside examiner and who has qualified as a marine safety drill conductor.     Deacon Ronald Fredrick Brown was born December 22, 2012 at 10:53 a.m. at Salem Birthing Center to Clayton and Hilary (Heagy) Brown of Dallas, Ore. He weighed 7-lbs, 10-oz. at birth and was 19" long.  His grandparents are Ron and Lane Heagy of Cathlamet, Phil and Karen Arness of Castle Rock, and Fred and Jane Brown of Dallas, Oregon.  His great-grandmothers are Louise Arness of Longview and Jean Heagy of Cathlamet.   • Archive center opens café, gift shop

    The Appelo Archives Center in Naselle has expanded its facility to include a larger gift shop and a new café. The Café and Gift Shop are located in the downstairs level of the center. The gift shop will be selling books, gifts and on consignment by members of the community.     All are invited to enjoy tantalizing scenes of Finland by coming to watch “A Musical Journey” at noon on February 16. The film will be shown at the Appelo Archives Center, located at 1056 SR 4 in Naselle. Along with scenes from Helsinki and the countryside, the visuals include works of painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The artist was stimulated by stories from the Kalevala, the epic poem of Finland. A featured building is the Kerimäki Church, the world’s largest wooden church.     To The Eagle: Recently there has been quite a bit of discussion in the area of gun control and assorted other political footballs.   • What's happening at the Fair?

     A noisy delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange Hall last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner is the Fair Board’s biggest fundraising event each year. A hard working group of volunteers planned and staffed this big event and did a fantastic job!  The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the barbeque and stoves out to our guests.
