  • Slope stabilization project almost ready

    The Washington Department of Transportation is still working on the final easements to stabilize a slope just east of Stella at Milepost 50.9 on SR 4. The site has had single lane traffic regulated by a stoplight since the unstable slope was discovered in December.     Public health officials in multiple states and the CDC are investigating a large outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee infections linked to consuming Great Value or Peter Pan Peanut Butter brands. Cowlitz County has four suspected cases involving the recalled peanut butter. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.     Commissioners of Wahkiakum PUD gave final approval to the project to extend the Western Wahkiakum Water System when they met Tuesday. Consulting Engineer Mike Johnson of Gray and Osborne, Inc., told the board all conditions have been met. The only outstanding issue is a dispute between the contractor and a subcontractor that was headed into binding arbitration today (Thursday).     Town of Cathlamet Attorney Bill Faubion proposed Tuesday the town adopt an ordinance regulating long term moorage in waters of the Columbia under town jurisdiction. The ordinance would allow boats, houseboats and other vessels to moor only seven days in a month, unless they were at a marina or a moorage owned by the owner of the vessel.     Members of the Cathlamet Town Council acted on a variety of issues at their February 20 meeting. —Mayor Dick Swart will convene a meeting with town forester Bill Olsen and a Longview park tree specialist to discuss management of Erickson Park. To date, more than $4,528,389 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster recovery assistance have been disbursed.
