    Even if you’ve been naughty this year you won’t want to miss our Christmas Carnival & Bazaar, happening this Saturday. Fun for the whole family, Santa and his elves will be on hand to answer any Christmas requests. There will be games and treats as well as a great selection of locally produced holiday items.     The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team lost their season opener 68-50 at South Bend on Saturday. The hosts jumped to a 15-2 first quarter lead and pushed that to 38-16 at halftime.   • Second 4-H Jamboree proves a huge success

    The annual 4-H sponsored “Jamboree” held December 6 was attended by 16 4-H members and family members. This is the second year for this event held the first Saturday in December and coordinated by 4-H leader Deb Gribskov. Youth are invited to come and learn how to make jam and properly process it in canning jars. They make enough jam to take some home and leave one with Gribskov for entry in the county Fair in August.   • Poor markets lead to logging shutdown

    The nationwide crisis in the housing and construction markets is leading to curtailments in the local timber industry. DeBriae Logging will shut down logging operations for two or more months. The firm employs approximately 130 people. "I don't know how long we'll shut down," owner Jerry DeBriae said Tuesday. "There's just no market." DeBriae emphasized that the shutdown is temporary.     Each year, the Cathlamet Woman's Club nominates a person in the community who has been outstanding in some way as its citizen of the year. The 2008 Citizen of the Year is Paul Aldinger. The club's announcement said that when Paul left Vancouver behind and moved to Puget Island, he jumped wholeheartedly, right into Cathlamet community activities. He was part of the group organized by the Woman's Club that cleaned up the broken glass in the Pioneer Church when the restoration work began.     The schedules for boys and girls basketball games between the Wahkiakum Mules and Mossyrock Vikings are being revised, Mule Athletic Director Bob Garrett announced Tuesday.     The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team started the 2008-09 season with three wins this past week. The Mules opened with a 65-47 win over the Comettes at Naselle on December 3. The Mules led 15-11 after one quarter, 33-22 at halftime, and 43-35 after three quarters. Shelby Deaton led the Mules with 21 points and 21 rebounds.     This past weekend the Wahkiakum Mule Wrestlers competed in their first event of the season, the 3 Rivers Tournament at Mark Morris High School. The Mules finished fifth overall, and brought home six medals.     Wahkiakum Superior Court Judge Michael Sullivan on Monday granted motions to dismiss suits against Wahkiakum County officials, Columbia Land Trust, and Ducks Unlimited. The judge ruled in favor of defendants' motions to dismiss because the actions failed to follow established procedures, called Civil Rules, for such actions. He did, however, dismiss the actions "without prejudice," meaning they could be refiled later in appropriate form.     The Helping Hand Food Bank in Cathlamet received a surprise visit from a delegation representing the office of Governor Chris Gregoire on December 3. The purpose of the visit was to review the work of the Helping Hand and its resources and services.     Wahkiakum County commissioners adopted their 2009 budgets last week and voted 2-1 not to increase property taxes. The action came last Thursday when their board reconvened their December 2 meeting to finish work on the 2009 budgets. Commissioner Blair Brady had proposed a 1 percent increase in the county levies as preparation for seeking special appropriations from the state legislature to help the county cover its revenue shortfalls.     Member churches of the Wahkiakum Interfaith Network are offering a free turkey dinner on Christmas Day to anyone. Dinner will be served in hour-long sittings from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Puget Island. A freewill offering will be collected and donated to community foodbanks.
