  • Mule boys claim KM, beat Vikes, Chinooks

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 29, 2011

The Mules defense played long and hard enough on Tuesday night to keep the team in the game until the offense decided to come out of its shell in the second half of a 66-49 victory over the visiting Kalama Chinooks. The Mules forced the Chinooks into 18 turnovers as they came away with 15 steals, six of those from sophomore Chris Bilgic. The Mule offense struggled to get going in the first half as they trailed 27-24 going into the break but came out from the half and posted a 23-point third quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating three-pointer...

  • Mules place fourth in Oroville Invite

    Dec 29, 2011

The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team placed fourth last week in the North Okanogan Holiday Invitational Tournament in Oroville. It took a committed team effort to earn the placing, said Coach Matt Stacey. "Being in the middle of Christmas break, and with families traveling, not all of the Mules were able to make this tournament," he said. "Each one who went committed to going out a warrior, win, draw or die. "That commitment to wrestling to the top of their ability, not giving up ever, and fighting until the final whistle allowed the team to come...

  • Fund drive under way for wrestling singlets

    Dec 29, 2011

The Wahkiakum Wrestling Club has started a drive to raise funds from the community to purchase new singlets for Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers. The team has 16 wrestlers but club members are looking to purchase around 20 singlets to allow for weight class variation and team growth. "The singlets in use now have seen quite a few seasons and are showing the wear," said club spokesperson Suzanne Mackey. "Each singlet would cost about $75, so our goal is to raise $1,500. Any donation toward this goal would be welcomed and appreciated." Wahkiakum Mule...

  • Happy New Year!

    Dec 29, 2011

NO SNOW--We didn't get a white Christmas in Skamokawa last Sunday, but that was fine with me, as we just had some rain, but it meant being able to come and go and not worry about having to cancel any plans due to icy or snowy conditions. For the last three Saturdays, we've had some decent days and that meant a great turn-out for the free community dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, a fantastic family gathering at the hall the following week, and a wonderful Christmas Eve, so we were all quite thankful for that stretch of nice, dry Saturdays....

At this point, the County Road Department will install safety barriers, and then the road may re-open. Engineers will observe the slide and develop a long term solution to the problem. "We will be monitoring the slide, particularly after intense rainfall," Public Works Director Pete Ringen said Friday. "Unless we see a dramatic change, we will add features at this location in the next...

  • Library sponsors Teen Library Night

    Ruby Murray|Dec 29, 2011

The Wahkiakum Community Network (WCN) wanted to see a safe, fun place for teens to spend time when they funded Cathlamet Public Library’s $2,000 proposal to create a Teen Library Night. The library hired Patrick Carrico, a local artist and educator who enjoys his work with students at the Wahkiakum School District, to develop the program, which has been underway for several weeks. The best thing about attending for Ariana Brock is “being yourself around other teenagers without being judged.” or for Dillon Bartholomew finding “a place to be w...

  • A lesson from last week's D.C. fiasco

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 29, 2011

The US House of Representatives gave us a Christmas present of sorts last week. The House and Senate have been working on legislation that would extend payroll tax breaks for low and middle income workers and that would maintain unemployment benefits. Both were set to expire at the end of 2011, and President Obama and Senate and House Democrats have been pushing for an extension. Republicans hadn't supported the extension, saying they wanted long term reductions in spending and federal permit approval of a new petroleum pipeline in Alaska. The...

  • New grandchild makes number 11

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 29, 2011

What a week! I hope all the readers had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did, as well as the few days prior to the holiday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. Wyatt is the second son for Shane and Delena, and he was eagerly hugged by big brother, Emmett, about an hour after he was born. Life is certainly a miracle. We headed to Oregon on Friday for the holiday and spent most of our time eating...
