  • The economy seems to be getting better

    Feb 1, 2018

To The Eagle: To hear and read the hysterical utterings rampant among some of our fellow citizens is both enjoyable and unsettling at the same time. I've been paying attention to national politics since my youth. This year has been exhilarating and hopeful for many of us who have been agonized over our country's drift to collectivism and nihilism. The economy seems to be getting better. Let's not ruin the mood with Hitler comparisons and pussy hats. Sincerely, Mike Swift Cathlamet...

  • Steelhead mortality from gillnetting may be lower than thought

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Feb 1, 2018

New data indicates that gillnetting may not be as harmful to steelhead as previously thought. The ability of commercial gillnetters to fish the mainstem Columbia River has mostly been removed by harvest reforms in Oregon and Washington, citing gillnetting as non-selective and potentially damaging to salmon and steelhead, including the 13 species listed as threatened or endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. Gillnet fishing continues, but almost all allowed gillnetting is in designated off-channel or select fishing areas where the...

  • Valentine Diamond Dinner Saturday at Fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 1, 2018

NEW MONTH--We may have a new month but it looks like we have the same weather; wet and blustery, with a side of slides and a dash of snow in the hills. Of course, if you were traveling over the mountains this past weekend, you might have gotten into a whole lot of snow and so much so, that some passes had to be closed for a bit due to multiple accidents happening. I hope you weren't in that mess of traffic stuck up on the mountainside someplace! Meanwhile, we had people calling in about the slide area near Stella, where many, many people said...

Volunteers paired up in shifts to stand outside on Main Street in Cathlamet or at the Chevron in Rosedale to collect donations from people passing by. "Thank you Cathlamet and District 4 fire chiefs and volunteers,"...

  • Commissioner's support economic district, increase bus routes

    Rick Nelson|Jan 25, 2018

Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to support creation of the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Economic Development District. Five years in the making, the district would develop a regional economic development strategy and find funding to help implement the strategies. Although he voted to support formation of the district, board Chair Mike Backman said he wanted to extend an invitation to Pacific County to join the district. "We have a lot in common with their workforce," he said, especially the fishing industry, he said. Bill Flashing, executive...

  • Corrections & Clarifications

    Jan 25, 2018

An article in last week's edition reporting questions and answers for candidates to fill a vacancy on the Cathlamet Town Council mistakenly attributed two comments by Jean Burnham to "Waller." The article should have said: First question: "What do you hope to accomplish? "--Burnham. I'd like to see a better relationship with Wahkiakum County and Port District 1, a symbiotic relationship and not adversarial so we could add ratepayers and fill empty buildings. In the long term, I'd like to see us be more of a tourist destination. Cathlamet is...

  • There is still time to donate Christmas items to Kiwanis

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 25, 2018

WEATHER--It was quite a weekend as it was wet and pretty doggone windy too. Thankfully the last half of Sunday wasn't too bad and we got to dry out a little and see calmer weather just prior to the big football games! But the end of last week, it was really wild, as the coastal areas just got hammered with massive waves, which came crashing through bottom floors of several Lincoln City hotels and did a considerable amount of damage. This was no time to have a bottom floor condo, that's for sure! Sadly, there was also a person swept to sea after...

The daughter of Leonard and Minnie (Hutton) Quigley II, she was born in Cathlamet on October 5, 1940. She grew up in Cathlamet, graduating from Cathlamet High School in 1958. On July 11, 1959 she married Rhodney Dunham (whom she met at the county fair), settling in Grays River, where they resided since, having recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. Elizabeth was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was the...

Mayor Dale Jacobson cast the tiebreaking vote Tuesday to select Jean Burnham to fill a vacant seat on the Cathlamet Town Council. Long-time Council Member Richard Swart resigned at the end of December, and the council had three applicants to fill the vacancy--Burnham, Paige Lake and Robert Stowe. The candidates answered questions from each council member, and then the council, Jacobson and town attorney Heidi Heywood retreated to a 20-minute executive session to evaluate the candidates. When...

  • We can do better than easy fixes

    Jan 18, 2018

To The Eagle: Allow me to applaud Krist Novoselic’s assertion that less knee-jerk partisanship and a restored focus on “real problems” would be healthy for Wahkiakum County. During a recent visit, I encountered a harder, more bitter right-left divide than I remember from my term as Cathlamet’s mayor (2010-13). I also sensed that tensions between old-timers and newcomers are intensifying beyond the point where the cross-current of ideas and perspectives is healthful to one where hard “camps” are emerging. In one instance, a friend shared that...

  • Lifelong struggles point to problems, solutions

    Jan 18, 2018

To The Eagle: I was born and raised on Puget Island and went to Wahkiakum High School. I'm of Norwegian descent and raised in a Protestant, commercial fishing family. I'm now 65 years old, and I see a lot of things that need to be fixed in this country. I'm disabled. I want to go back to work. Years ago, I was in a car wreck; a man came out of nowhere from behind at a high rate of speed as I was making a left turn in a 35 mph zone. The impact was so great that it knocked out the caps and fillings in my teeth. I was in severe pain with a back...

  • Lasagna dinner is Saturday at fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 18, 2018

SUNSHINE--I think we all agree that the sunshine last Saturday and Sunday was certainly a welcome break from the dreary rain we'd been dealing with. Of course, this was a three day weekend, and it figures that we could only have two of the three be nice, but oh well, that was better than none! The clouds rolled in on Monday morning and they say this whole week is supposed to be wet, but this is one time that I wish the forecasters would be wrong, as we really were enjoying those sunny, uplifting days! BE WARY--For those that are traveling SR 4...
