The fun never stops for the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners. The board recessed their meeting last week to interview two candidates to take over as director of the department of Health and Human Services. On Wednesday, they reconvened and voted 3-0 to offer the position to Chris Bischoff, who is currently the environmental health manager for Cowlitz County Health and Human Services. He is also the president of the Washington State Association of Local Public Health Officials. He is replacing Sue Cameron, who is retiring from the postion...
The new K-8 principal at Wahkiakum School District, Nikki Reese, would rather give up her Social Security number and her mother's maiden name than submit to an interview. Nevertheless, she is articulate and poised, and flew through the experience on Tuesday like she'd been doing it every day for years. Reese, the daughter of a mathematics professor at Lower Columbia College, grew up in Longview and attended Longview schools. She began her undergraduate work at LCC before transferring to Western...
To The Eagle: After reading the recent article in The Eagle about questioning the need for health care, I feel I need to share my thoughts. First of all, I have never met a person that never needed any health care provided to them. Everyone eventually needs it – whether preventative or reactive. We all know that without it, a sick person risks wiping out their family’s financial well being. As a nurse friend of mine that works at a hospital recently said, “Even with health care, most people are never more than one bad health issue away from...
To The Eagle: In response to the Mayor’s recent advocacy for roundabouts on Highway 4, I would like to bring to your readers attention some practical matters affecting our community that these structures would affect. If two roundabouts are built, one at the intersection of Main St., Greenwood Rd., and Hwy 4 and the second roundabout at the intersection of Columbia St., Boege Rd., and Hwy 4, many adjoining properties and infrastructures owned and/or operated by the following interests would be impacted: Fire Dist. 4; State of Washington; C...
To The Eagle: A big heartfelt thank you to all the athletes and fans that stood for our National Anthem this week. Now to those that took a knee, you missed an opportunity to stand and show your respect for your fellow Americans of all colors, shapes and sizes. I, as just one of so many that served our country, remember some of the finest people I served with were Black, White, Hispanic, Asian and Gay. Now ain’t that America? My greatest concern for our country is that our young people, those that are our future, will not study the history o...

JUST PERFECT--We couldn't have asked for a better day to hold the First Annual Skamokawa Vista Park Kite Festival this past Saturday, as it was just right I thought! Early in the morning, the winds were pretty calm, but then the afternoon winds showed up on cue and the big, colorful, playful and awesome kites filled the skies to the delight of a park full of kite lovers! The t-shirt weather made the Ship Channel Espresso trailer a big hit, as I saw smoothies and floats and Italian sodas pouring...

The first annual Cathlamet Art Festival sponsored by Tsuga Gallery was great fun and brought new customers into several downtown businesses. The event was opened with a reception on Friday night at Tsuga Gallery, and then people made their way to the Pioneer Community Center to hear Washington State Poet Laureate, Tod Marshall, do a poetry reading, followed by local musicians Andrew Emlen and Kyleen Austin. On Saturday, there was an artist market full of beautiful items in the Bank of Pacific...
Wahkiakum County commissioners covered a lot of ground at their meeting Tuesday. They concluded the day with an executive session to hear comments from a committee assigned to interview candidates for the position of director of Health & Human Services, and they recessed to Wednesday afternoon when they would hold two more executive sessions to interview the candidates themselves, holding open the option of reconvening the meeting in open session to pick the new director. Commissioner Mike Backman raised an issue discussed the previous evening...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council acted on utility rates, appointed a new member, agreed to budget for a town administrator and acted on other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. Andrew Lea resigned from the council last month, and the council had two applicants to fill the seat for the remainder of the term, which expires December 1. The council appointed Jean Burnham, a town resident since 2011. "For a while now, I have been curious as to how things work here, and why they do not,...
To The Eagle: To be against the idea of roundabouts just because one doesn't like them is not keeping the best interests of the community in mind. These traffic safety structures provide a practical way to slow traffic while including nice highway landscaping. As for our local truckers, most have no objection. Those who have used the Warrenton roundabout find traffic there easy to deal with. At least 10 times as many log trucks use that facility there as compared to here on SR 4. The Port of Astoria Log Shipping Yard is right there. Have you...
By Diana Zimmerman Commissioners at the Wahkiakum County Port 1 meeting discussed several issues last Thursday including how to deal with boaters who continue to power on, the coming dredging season, a vendor fair, and a security system to address thefts and vandalism at the port. The three commissioners passed a resolution earlier this year that stated that the first time boaters power on at the launch ramp, they would receive a warning. The second time would result in a $100 fine, the third...
WET, WET--As this week began, we had quite a bit of rain and wind too! With all the dry forests around us and the fires raging in so many parts of the PNW, it was really a welcome relief, and it beat the snow that Montana got, as I'm not quite ready for that yet! By the end of the week, we are supposed to have some drier weather return so that will be a relief to all those with outdoor plans for the weekend. In the meantime, I'm listening to the roar of some thunder and hearing there are water spouts along the coast; wild Monday for sure!...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met Tuesday morning to listen to reports, discuss a recent request for an exception to a policy, and approve travel. After reviewing the PUD’s policy on security deposits, the commissioners announced that they would not take action on the request from a customer for an exception at the last meeting. The customer was required to pay a deposit equaling two months of bills due to late payments or nonpayment. After paying the deposit in full, the p...
