The Lambing Management School on April 17-18 was well attended including several youth participants. The Cathlamet town council met yesterday morning as The Eagle went to press to decide weather or not to accept state funding for construction of new mains and pump stations for a new sewage treatment plant. Also on the agenda of the meeting, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, was the scheduled second and third readings of revisions to the ordinance establishing the town's timber fund cumulative reserve. The Cathlamet town council handled a wide variety of business when it reconvened its adjourned meeting last Monday. Items ranged from a report on the safety of city hall to recommendations to amend the town zoning ordinance. A group of local men and women may soon be certified to help the public in case of emergency. The Wahkiakum County emergency medical technician (EMT) class had 17 students complete a course in EMT certification on April 11. From January until April, students spent Tuesday and Thursday evenings and every other Saturday in classes held at the Wahkiakum Fire Hall for a total of 150 hours. Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie told the board of commissioners this week he is searching for a back-up transformer for the Grays River/Westend system. Tramblie reported that over the last year he has explored options of connecting the distribution systems between Cathlamet and Grays River and between Pacific County PUD and Wahkiakum PUD. Work to connect either system could cost the utility $500,000. St. James Family Center in Cathlamet will present programs on youth and family safety on April 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizers say the program will feature activities for people of all ages. The new Cathlamet Yacht Club is off to a good start. Club Commodore Chuck Norton reported that high interest in the club has surprised and pleased its founders. Local officials are still awaiting determinations by state and federal officials on how much federal economic stimulus money will be available locally. The Town of Cathlamet has applied for $987,600 in stimulus grant and loan funds from the US Department of Agriculture. Cathlamet Christian Fellowship (CCF) church is offering a faith-based, 12-step program to help people handle a variety of addictions. The program, called Celebrate Recovery, was started 17 years ago in an Anaheim, Calif., church, said Shane Skinner, local program leader. The CCF started offering the program a year ago. A suspected arson fire damaged the Wahkiakum High School stadium bleachers Saturday afternoon. Officers from the Longview Fire Department and Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department are investigating the cause of the fire, which may be arson. Meanwhile, damage to the bleachers, especially the roof, led Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Bob Garrett to reschedule track meets set for middle and high school athletes for other venues.
