What's Happening at the Fair?

April 23, 2009

This Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the Wahkiakum Fair Association will be holding a fundraiser at the Duck Inn in Skamokawa. For one day only, all food and non-alcoholic beverage sales will be donated to this year’s 101st fair celebration. So bring your family or your friends and join us this Sunday for a delicious home cooked meal. To make your reservation call 795-3655.

Over the past few weeks I have been overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity shown to the fair within our small community. First I must thank the wonderful Gray’s River Grange members Donna Moody, Carol Ervest, Bill Karwoski, Esther Gregg, Sulema Zerr and Steve Puddicombe, who purchased and donated an ice machine for the fair kitchen. This will not only be a tremendous benefit during fair but creates a new revenue stream for the fair campground.

Shortly before the Easter Bingo I was informed by Foster Farms that they would be unable to donate this year’s prizes. Within five hours, Cathlamet Building Materials, Cathlamet Chevron, Cathlamet Pharmacy, Cathlamet Video, the Duck Inn, Hancock Forest Management, Larry’s Auto, The Eagle, Made in Wahkiakum, Wright Pro Hardware, Riverview Restaurant, and Sharon’s Pizza, all stepped forward to lend their support, donating over $500 worth of prizes. Due to their generous donations, Easter Bingo was a complete success, helping the fair raise almost $1,500. Thank you again for saving the day!

After careful deliberation and numerous votes, the fair board is delighted to announce the 2009 fair theme as ‘Country Roots & Barnyard Boots.’ Thank you to everyone who entered their ideas. It was a close competition but the chosen winner was Patty Durstletter. She will receive a free large pizza from Sharon’s Pizza donated by Commissioner Blair Brady.

The county has been working hard on pushing forward with the new fairground arena and hopes to start accepting bids in the next two weeks. If all goes according to plan we hope to break ground in June.

The 2009 Premium Book is under way with advertising space still available. If you have a local business, don’t miss out on this opportunity to reach the residents of Wahkiakum. Call The Eagle today to reserve your space.

If you’d like to become involved with the fair or have an idea on how the fair can be improved, get in touch. You can send an email to wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net or call the fair office on 795-3480.
