COOLED DOWN--Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed the cloudier, cooler mornings before the sun came out in the afternoon as that meant things did not get so hot here as they have been inland, and that's fine by me. The heavy marine layer even gave us some damp roads a couple of days from the dew dripping off the trees and beings it's been so dry, even that amount of moisture was welcomed. However, by Saturday evening we were listening to real rain in West Valley and I was totally happy about that. As a matter of fact, I think I even heard my yard...

After 38 years, Bill Faubion has decided to step down from his position as Wahkiakum District Court judge. His tenure will end on August 31. "Law school called my bluff," Faubion said last week. "I had no intention of ever being a lawyer, but my brother talked me into taking the law school admissions test, and I did well on it. Then he talked me into applying for law school, and they accepted me. I wasn't doing anything else, so there I was." "My mother always said, 'When doors open up for you,...

Commissioners met Tuesday with Cameron and other department officials...
The Cathlamet Rowing Club was formed when two Wahkiakum residents, Julius Dalzell and Allen Bennett, decided to share their love of boats with others. Dalzell, who grew up on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, spent a lot of time rowing small working boats in the Bay of Fundy. Members of the Wahkiakum County club enjoy rowing, paddling and sailing those same kind of classic small crafts in the Columbia River. The group meets regularly to row, and they gather each New Year's Day for a special...
Julius Dalzell, one of the 2017 Cathlamet Wooden and Classic Boat Show organizers, was a little worried about the turnout when the event opened on a beautiful Saturday morning, but he shouldn't have been. He'd printed 40 more ballots than the year before, and they were gone by noon. "It's a blast," Allen Bennett, another volunteer organizer said. "It's just a labor of love. We just love boats. We've got more diversity than we had last year. We expanded to all types of boats and we've got some...
To The Eagle: The wilds of western Wahkiakum, the "outback" of greater metropolitan Cathlamet, is home to three of my greatest local heroes in the continuing battle against the encroachment of overweening government and bureaucracy. They are: Maury Mooers, for his valiant stand against the Corps of Engineers in the Steamboat Slough Struggle, the late Del Frederickson, who put Grays River back in its banks, and Poul Toftemark, who, with patience and forbearance, stopped Columbia Land Trust's destruction of the Kandoll Road environs. So, in...

The 3rd Annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby will be held August 30-31, according to Cathlamet area resident and VFW member, Bob Roche, who is organizing the event. He added, "We want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors and Widows, many of whom are from other other parts of the country and have never fished or even seen a large salmon. The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports on Tuesday and announced that they had decided to forgo plans to survey public interest in the possibility of the utility taking on a water system that is currently being managed by the Town of Cathlamet. “As I was primary instigator behind that discussion,” Commissioner Bob Jungers said, “upon further consideration, it seems to me the probability of the poll returning a very ambiguous result has dampened my enthusiasm for p...
To The Eagle: The photograph of a fully involved (completely ablaze) car in The Eagle of July 20 (Sheriff's Report, page 5) makes a dramatic point that having a proper fire extinguisher, readily available, can limit damage to a minimum, as opposed to a complete loss of the vehicle. The highway between Cathlamet and Longview is no place to expect rapid response from emergency personnel. A fuel leak in the engine compartment can be readily extinguished by the driver who has an extinguisher handy. The alternative is the metal skeleton of a...
By Diana Zimmerman The Cathlamet Wooden and Classic Boat Festival is this weekend at the Elochoman Slough Marina. “Classic means not just totally wooden, but wooden and fiberglass is permissible,” Julius Dalzell, one of the event organizers explained. “It’s going to be a good show, I think. It’s supposed to cool down for the weekend.” Dalzell is hoping for 30 boats, from kayaks to a 36-foot U.S. Coast Guard Motor Life Boat. Visitors will have a chance to vote for their favorite boats and winners will be announced on Sunday afternoon....
