Jacob Hammond has been involved with the Wahkiakum County Fair in one way or another for over a decade. This year, he decided that he wanted to express his appreciation by vying for a fair crown, which would allow him to formally fundraise for the event. "I wanted to run because I like helping the fair," Hammond said. "I realized that the fair princesses can benefit the fair a lot by raising money and I wanted to do that. Where are the guys? When they decided I could run for Fair King, I...

Jean and Neil Beerbower can attest, they absolutely work more than they did before they retired. It's almost fair time, and a lot of their waking hours right now are spent in Skamokawa, getting the fairgrounds ready for the annual event, painting the T Building, installing insulation in the youth barn, watering plants, worrying about bathrooms, and more. The two were giving the T Building a fresh new coat of paint on Tuesday and talking about things that needed to be done this year, or in the...
To The Eagle: Thank you Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County for a great Bald Eagle Days festival! The Chamber and the community put on a great event. The marina staff did a terrific job - boaters love coming to Cathlamet. However, we need to set the record straight. Cliff is indeed a river rat. But, as the picture in The Eagle showed, he's the River Rat of Welcome Slough. The East Birnie Slough river rats are a whole different breed. Despite the caption, the picture in The Eagle last week was of the two of us on the Portland Yacht Club (PYC) float....
The print version of a story about financing a fire truck for the Town of Cathlamet incorrectly stated the $100,000 was a share of funds from the county wide Emergency Services Levy, which helps the different fire departments in the county with equipment purchases. Instead, the $100,000 for the down payment is a transfer of revenue from the sale of town timber. The Portland Yacht Club's Bald Eagle float was incorrectly identified as that of the East Birnie Slough River Rats. The yacht club's float was awarded the grand prize for parade...
NICE WEEKEND--Our heat wave has continued and once again we've had some pretty doggone nice weather with only a hint of dampness last Thursday morning, but by afternoon, the sun was up and shining again and it warmed right back up. The fact that we've had over 80 inches of rain this year, makes it hard to believe that our dry spell has already caused our lawns to turn brown! It has also meant a lot of fires in the Western state, with 70 percent of them being caused by man, so it's truly imperative to be careful with any fire or hot metals or...

Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Paige Lake said earlier this month that if she wanted to build excitement for an event, it needed to start with her. That philosophy paid off for this year's Bald Eagle Days. There were more vendors in Cathlamet, a bigger variety of parade entrants, a new energy, and a big crowd. There were lines for most of the activities in the kid's area, too. "The parade was so much fun," Lake said. "The staff at the Bank of the Pacific did a great job organizing it,...
Town of Cathlamet officials may well wonder when work on their new waste water treatment plant will be completed. On Monday, they voted to declare the project contract completed and release the contractor retainage bond. However, the plant's drying beds are overflowing, forcing the town to contract with the City of Aberdeen to process incompletely processed biosolids. Basically, the long wet winter prevented the drying beds from working as intended, Jon Hinton of the consulting engineering firm Gray and Osborne explained to the council....
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met Tuesday morning to listen to reports and discuss the language in a public poll about a possible water system merger with the Town of Cathlamet. Customer Service Representative Lia Sealund gave an update on conservation. The current fiscal period will end soon, and Sealund suggested that the PUD use their remaining funds in a direct mail project which would send two LED lights to PUD customers and introduce some of them to the newer technology....
To The Eagle: In a recent local survey conducted through Wahkiakum Community Network, statistics indicated that 51 percent of people surveyed believe police don’t enforce underage drinking.” This mentality causes a great concern for two reasons. First, this opens the door to a perception that the illegal and unhealthy choice of underage drinking is permissible. Secondly, it is a false reality of how our local law enforcement addresses the matter of underage drinking. There was a recent situation in our county where numerous youth were cit...

The Cathlamet Fire Department wants to buy a new fire truck, but when presented with a financing plan, members of the town council put on the brakes at their monthly meeting on Monday. Fire Chief Vernon Barton has proposed buying a demonstration model at a price of $412,015. With a $100,000 down payment from existing funds, the town would need to finance $344,564.18. The vendor, True North Emergency Equipment of Hillsboro, Ore., has proposed a lease-to-purchase financing plan with options to pay off in either seven, eight, nine or 10 years. Ann...
