Registration is now open for the 2017 Bald Eagle Run/Walk Challenge. This event has something for everyone – a 10k run, a 5k run, and a 2 mile walk or run. Meet in front of Cathlamet Pharmacy at 8:30 a.m., to register and check-in. The runs and walk begin promptly at 9:00 a.m., and all three of the routes will end back at the starting point. The awards ceremony will be held immediately at the end of the 10K. Members of the Cathlamet Town Council approved proposed updates to the town's shoreline management program (SMP) and acted on other business at their monthly meeting Monday. The town and Wahkiakum County have been working for four years in a joint project to update their SMP. Skamokawa resident Kay Walters was named Citizen of the Year by the Cathlamet Womans Club for her involvement in 4-H and the Wahkiakum County Fair. Walters has shared her love for animals with more than one generation of local kids through the 4-H program. A week ago my house became filled with laughter and fun after the arrival of three of my teen granddaughters. We have been to the beach, to the Astoria Column, shopping, hiking, hot-tubbing and just plain being lazy. I needed this, and to top it off, now my niece and her daughter have arrived. Joan Marie (Nielsen) Williams passed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday afternoon, June 8, 2017. Mom was born on May 10, 1932 in Tillamook, Ore., to Victor and Una Nielsen. She and her two brothers, Dale and Don, grew up on a dairy farm, enjoying family and friends in their close-knit community. She knew our dad, Gene, in high school but it wasn’t until he was out of the Navy that they dated and eventually married on May 20, 1955. Ray Elton (Teed) Prestegard died May 18, 2017 at the hospice center in Longview. He was born April 14, 1935 on Puget Island to Archie and Ethel (Nepsund) Prestegard, with his twin brother Roy. He lived on Puget Island and in Cathlamet and attended Wahkiakum High School. Teed was in the United States Air Force for 21 years, from 1954 to 1975.
