Skamokawa resident Kay Walters was named Citizen of the Year by the Cathlamet Womans Club for her involvement in 4-H and the Wahkiakum County Fair. Walters has shared her love for animals with more than one generation of local kids through the 4-H program. She was born in Detroit, Mich., to a nurse and machinist, and raised amongst a large German clan in an agricultural community in Indiana. "My mom was one of the first to leave for education," Walters said. "The Germans there were kind of like...
By Rick Nelson Just like the river that's eroding beaches and threatening property on Cape Horn and Puget Island shorelines, the requirement for permits to address the situation just keeps flowing. Wahkiakum County's board of commissioners, acting as commissioners for four flood control zone districts (FCZD), have been working for two years to set up beach nourishment programs that replenish eroded beaches with sand dredged from shoals in the Columbia River navigation channel. With biological studies and engineering nearing completion this...
SO-SO--It depended on where you were this past weekend as to what kind of weather you had. For some, it wasn't a bad day at all, while for others, it was a day of some sunshine accompanied by various rain showers. As we're only a week away from Summer, let's hope we have a bit of a dry stretch so we can put away those umbrellas! If we are to believe the forecast, it's supposed to be nice for this Father's Day weekend, so let's hope that's true. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 15-21 are Robert Montgomery, Jason Ledtke, Megan...

A week ago my house became filled with laughter and fun after the arrival of three of my teen granddaughters. We have been to the beach, to the Astoria Column, shopping, hiking, hot-tubbing and just plain being lazy. I needed this, and to top it off, now my niece and her daughter have arrived. This is heaven with the young giggles and music in the car and in the house. Such fun. I didn’t plan too well for the two-week visit with the granddaughters as it cut into the Father’s Day weekend. So I will make a quick trip to California on Friday to...

They were married 61 years before Dad passed away last year on July 4, 2016. Together they raised the three of us (...

To The Eagle: The Skamokawa and Grays River Granges have played an important role shaping our Wahkiakum community. But, there is very little information available at our museum in Cathlamet concerning the Grange and its history. We are requesting the community share any memorabilia you may have that will preserve and honor the Grange. Any photos or information will be shared with the Wahkiakum County Historical Museum. We are interested in the active Skamokawa Grange #425, active Grays River Grange #124, the closed Elochoman Grange and Puget...
To The Eagle: I am really excited about the upcoming 2017 season at the Julia Butler Hansen Swimming Pool. Last year we invested in an excellent pool liner, two new water heating systems for our showers and a new locker room floor for the ladies. This year we will have a fantastic new pool heater system. Perhaps more significantly, I have chosen to change the lifeguard training and the swim lesson programs to what I think will be a very successful system for us. I signed up for the Starfish Aquatics Institute programs to train guards locally...
To The Eagle: This is a suggestion for your reader, Mr. Bouchard: Why not calm yourself about president Trump, elected legally by many of our neighbors? We put up with your guy and his incompetence for eight long years. Eight years of low employment and weakness in our society. Your side lost the election and refuse to accept it. You would rather bellyache and wear your pink hat, or is it the black mask and hoodie? It seems you would rather have a failed and crippled country than a successful one. The narcissism and hubris old hippies like you...
To The Eagle: It's important to us as recent Cathlamet residents to thank all that have played a part in helping the Cape Horn area property owners sign the Right of Entry document. This last effort has taken all of us over two and a half years to finally get to this point of achievement, and because of this time invested for our need of the sand replenishment, we can finally move forward with the final details to get on the Corp of Engineers’ calendar. Thank you to all of County Commissioners; Blair Brady, Mike Backman and especially our D...
NOT TOO BAD--It wasn't blazing hot this weekend, but by golly, it was just about perfect for the car buffs that showed up as last year's scalding temperatures were replaced with much milder, and more comfortable ones for the annual Rods and Reels Rod Run that happened this past Saturday! Sunday was the same mix of clouds and sunshine moments, so it was a great time to be outside doing yardwork or just enjoying the dry time. Looks like we've got some more dry days ahead during the first part of this week, so the BBQ season may be in full swing,...
