  • Final Mules home game set for Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 20, 2016

PLENTY NASTY--While some folks were complaining about the fact that the "big one" didn't hit us this past Saturday, there were plenty of folks, like me, that felt like our prayers had been answered when another low formed to the west of the "big eye" and drew enough power from it, that those of us in our area and most up north, did not experience too much damage. There were exceptions of course, like down on the Oregon coast where a tornado hit a couple of towns, and were truly devastated, so that was pretty horrific. For all those folks along...

Council Member Dick Swart and the county board of commissioners broached that subject Tuesday at the commission's weekly meeting. Swart had reported that the council is studying its water and sewer rates, with increases coming soon. One report to the council stated rates would have to increase 110 percent to keep the sewer system solvent. "One of the underlying issues, at least for sewer rates, is the small customer ba...

  • Please vote for integrity, Cothren says

    Oct 13, 2016

To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County has had the pleasure and distinction of having some of the most civil elections with rarely an utterance of a personal attack or a shot across the bow, so to speak. Unfortunately this election is somewhat different and maybe it’s just the oversaturation of political incorrectness 24/7 on every TV channel, but we seem to be plagued by some very poor, dishonest and just plain rude comments right from one of our candidates. As most of you, I am more than a little ashamed of anyone that would choose this path, but w...

  • Local tavern now open with new owners

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 13, 2016

MIXED BAG--Last weekend was a mix of weather, as we had some heavy rain at times, then lighter showers and even some gloomy but yet, dry spells, so we hope you were able to get out during one of those dry times to do those outdoor chores which seem never ending, even during the Fall! The week ahead looks to be a mixture too, but then, afterall, it is October, so we can't expect it to be super nice all the time. As I write this however, the sun is out after a very foggy morning, so we'll enjoy the sun's rays while we can! HURRICANE--Hurricane...

  • Bank supports school sports

    Oct 6, 2016

The Bank of the Cascades recently contributed $2,500 to the Wahkiakum School District to ensure that local students can afford to participate in school sponsored sports programs. The funds will be split between the districts pay-to-play program ($1,000) and an associated student body (ASB) fund that covers lodging for high school teams. Superintendent Bob Garrett said the gift is welcome because ASB funds have been depleted in recent years. "Through its generous contribution, Bank of the...

Why are you running for this position? Prestegard: Because I feel that I am the most qualified person with my business background and my experience working with volunteer organizations in board positions. The other thing I can bring to the plate is an extensive background in team building and training. And by doing that I can help with some of these small boards that I will be working with. I'm hoping that we can make some of their tasks easier by having a different perspective on decision...

  • Free movies to be shown in Cathlamet

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 6, 2016

WEEKEND--We ended last week with a gorgeous day on Friday, with temperatures just the way I like them, with a bit of crispness in the air but lots of sunshine. However, the rains did appear on Saturday and some on Sunday, which came with mixed reviews, as some were ready for the rain, the Fall foods, a roaring fire and the great book reading weather, while some of us would have liked just a little more sunshine in order to enjoy the first weekend in October and its activities. It looks like a mixed bag for the week, so keep those umbrellas...
