NICE START--After a bit of wetness to end last week, I was nicely surprised to see mostly sunny skies on Sunday to begin this week on a drier note. The Wahkiakum Community Center should soon re-open under direction of a new manager. The center, located in the first floor of the Cathlamet library building, has been closed since the end of July when funding ended for its Americorps manager. Some programs in existence at that time have continued under direction of volunteers, but the center has been closed. Volunteers have pressed both the Town of Cathlamet, which owns the center building, and Wahkiakum County, which has contracted with the town to operate the center, to get the center open...

Several community leaders met last week with representatives from the National Park Service on September 14 to continue planning a potential park on the site of the former sewage lagoons in Cathlamet. NICE WEEKEND--We had a pretty great weekend weather-wise, as there was a lot going on and it's always great when big events wind up enjoying sunny days. Butch passed away on September 3, 2106 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Butch was born on September 12, 1940 in Longview, Wa. to Jennings and Rita Rodal. He grew up in Cathlamet, Wa. graduating from Wahkiakum High School in 1958. He lived in the Longview and Kelso area for the majority of his adult life. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965. It was busy on Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina. Around noon, the Coast Guard put on a performance for spectators, including the owners of a boat that ran aground on a sand bar. Liza Jo Neer died August 24, 2016 at the home of her mother in Cathlamet. She was born July 23, 1961 in Boston, Mass. She attended school in Mass. and Maine and graduated high school in 1979. She worked as a day care provider for several years and then spent 27 years working for International Paper. She received a transfer to Beaverton, Ore., three months ago. The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center will be open for tours Thursday, September 15, from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The Center is located on Main St., and is the oldest house in Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County having been built in the late 1860's.
