To The Eagle: As I went to get my Christmas lights to string across my house, I discovered they were part of many items that were stolen from my home Sept 6, 2014. I was so aggravated, I wrote this letter. If nothing else, it felt good to vent. After over 100 finger prints were pulled and a year later waiting on them to be examined in Olympia, I was told none were clear prints and could not be used to identify anyone — a total loss and no personal property insurance! I am very grateful, though, that the thief did not "trash" my house. Sue G...

WHITE OR NOT?--As this week began, we were enjoying a break from the miserable weather we'd been having, so we were all happy to see all the standing water begin to recede by Sunday evening. However, along came Monday and that enjoyment we had felt quickly subsided as a strong wind and rain event pounded many parts of our county and others. Trees were falling all over the place, from one county to the other, and that meant there were power outages and telephone outages as well. On Puget Island, one huge loss was the P.I. fire station which...

The Wahkiakum Mules new wrestling coach Frankie Mendez managed to salvage the Downriver Challenge this year after rumors that the program wasn't going to survive took the event off some coaches' calendars. When Mendez found out that only six teams were expected, he got on the phone and started calling wrestling programs. By the time he was done, 10 more teams from all over Washington and Oregon had promised to come to Cathlamet for the event. "Chief Leschi, Neah-Kah-Nie, Kelso," Mendez began to...
The long dry season is officially behind us. Wild December weather brought rain and wind and all their attendant woes. It felled trees, saturated fields and hills, and propelled water from its usual course onto roads and parking lots and other low lying places. According to the National Weather Service, the area might be in for a second round starting today (Thursday). On December 9, Grays River peaked and there was significant flooding in the Westend. More than a dozen roads were closed due to...
To The Eagle: Thank you for the excellent story about Mary Ann Nelson being honored by the Cathlamet Womans Club as citizen of the year in recognition of her volunteer work in the community. As a regular reader of The Eagle and a periodic visitor to Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, I am heartened to see the community moving in the positive direction of caring, sharing and tolerance. Those who may feel this is the wrong direction are welcome to go back to where they came from or to hasten to the eternal happiness they profess to look forward to....
The Town of Cathlamet and Port District 1 have tentatively agreed to use the town's old sewer lagoons as a site for disposing of dredge spoils from the Elochoman Marina and Elochoman Slough. The town has switched its sewer disposal system to its new plant, and the sediment has been cleaned out of the three lagoons. Jim Maul and Josh Elliott, consulting engineers working with Port 1 to plan the dredging program, estimate there's enough material to completely fill one of the lagoons and much of...
Port District1 commissioners honored Larry Bonds, who retired from the board earlier this year, at Thursday's meeting. "I want to thank you and congratulate you for the years that you spent trying to keep our costs down and for representing the citizens of Cathlamet," Commissioner Bob Kizziar said. "It was a pleasure. I enjoyed it," Bonds said. "You always seemed to ask the tough questions that none of us would," Commissioner Gary Quigley said. In other business, Kizziar asked the other...
Shane Pfenniger, the line crew foreman at Wahkiakum PUD, spent a few minutes with the board of commissioners at their meeting Tuesday morning to share a lucky find. Using the infrared camera, purchased by the PUD in 2014, to investigate a pole that had been getting unusually warm, his crew found a hairline crack on a fuse holder. “This would have been really hard to find,” Pfenniger said. “It was 7200 volts going down that pole. If one of the linemen or an apprentice would have climbed the p...

LESS INTENSE--As this work week begins, the weather is a little calmer than it has been, but then, it wouldn't take much considering last week was just totally wild! With flooded roads, a tornado in Battle Ground, local roads and highways closed from water or slides, plus major highways, like I-5 in Woodland closed due to a huge slide, and Hwy 12 closed indefinitely, plus many accidents that were water related, well, it was just a ridiculous, wild and crazy weather week. There were even sand bags used on Puget Island at some homes, so the...

On December 3, community members and businesses drank their favorite coffee or latte purchased from participating locations of “Wake Up for United Way,” a fundraising event put on by United Way of Cowlitz & Wahkiakum Counties. The goal of this event was to partner with community coffee shops to enhance awareness and contributions of the 2016 United Way campaign which directly supports its 22 partner agencies. Businesses who contributed a portion of their sales from opening time until noon were: ZoJo Coffee (two Longview locations), Red Lea...
On Tuesday, students in Tina Merz's seventh grade elective class traveled to Longview to do a little, scratch that, a lot of shopping for the STARS program, which makes Christmas possible for local families in need. STARS is a non-profit program sponsored by the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office. The program was set up to help local families who are struggling by providing gifts for their children at Christmas. Paper stars, each inscribed with a personal wish list were placed on trees at...
Wahkiakum County Port 1 commissioners, who are preparing to dredge the marina and the neighboring channel next year, find themselves stalled in the permit process while they wait to hear if the Town of Cathlamet will allow them to place their dredge spoils in the empty sewage lagoons nearby. A piece of the property belongs to the port, while the rest belongs to the town. Maul, Foster and Alongi, a Portland environmental engineering and consulting firm hired by Port 1 to oversee the dredging...
by Rick Nelson Wahkiakum County commissioners worked through a variety of business Tuesday ranging from adopting their 2016 budgets to approving emergency road repair. No one from the public attended the board's budget hearing, held on Monday in accord with state law. According to meeting minutes, Auditor Diane Tischer and Sheriff Mark Howie asked the board to increase the 5 percent raise they'd budgeted for department heads, the first raise for them in nearly 10 years. There were a few other adjustments totaling $2,399. Commissioners...
To The Eagle: The huge turnout at the celebration of Rod Prestegard’s life last Saturday reminded me of the time after I bought his old brown Chevrolet pick-up. From that time until recently, complete strangers would often honk and wave at me (or more likely the truck). It seems that although Rod was a couple of years older than me, in an old baseball cap, people who cared so much for Rod assumed I was Rod. I hope those who now realize that it’s not Rod driving that old truck, will continue to honk and wave, not only because I’ve gotten quite...
To The Eagle: I would like to clarify an article dated November 19, 2015 regarding the Port District 1 plans for the decommissioned town sewer lagoons. The Town of Cathlamet has received a grant from the National Park Service for rivers, trails and conservation assistance. According to Dan Miller, NPS, you can estimate that this award is roughly $10,000-$15,000 per year or $20,000 to $30,000 over two years. Most projects like this take approximately two years. To the best of my knowledge, this grant is for technical and funding assistance, not...
To The Eagle: We would like to give everyone the opportunity to shop for the stars that they have taken, so we will extend the gift return date to December 14. Families will start to receive their gifts from December 14-18. Thanks to everyone who has supported this program by taking stars or donating monetary funds. This program would not exist without your help. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas. John Knopp Cathlamet...
Mary Ann Nelson was recently selected as Citizen of the Year by the Cathlamet Womans Club for her tireless and generous work with PFLAG, as president and member of the Southwestern Washington Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA), as well as Kiwanis and her thirty years as a Preschool teacher for St. James Family Center. "I feel really weird about this," Nelson said. "I think of when Rick's dad (her father--in--law) had this honor." "They do wonderful things," she said of...
