The beginning of 2015 has been busy for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Our new director, Shannon Gildea, took over in December and has been adapting well with the transition. The Community Garden is waking from its winter slumber with a work party on April 18th, Saturday from 9 a.m. to whenever we are worn out. Already some onions (yummy Walla Walla) have been planted in the section grown for the donation to local food banks to distribute. The raspberries have been pruned and fertilized along with our donated blueberry plants. Weeding and rototilling will be done on work day to prepare for more planting in the Food Bank section and for individual plots, too. Several individuals have already begun to clean up their p...
Baylee Olsen, daughter of Shelley and Bill Olsen of Cathlamet, was named the 2B Player of the Year by the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Players are nominated and voted on by coaches from around the state. Olsen, who averaged 15.9 points per game, has signed a letter of intent to play for Saint Martins University in Lacey next fall....

Julia Ellen Mackenzie, 76, of Cathlamet, passed away Jan. 17, 2015, at St. John Medical Center. She was born July 24, 1938, in Sacramento, Calif., to Charles Albert and Regina (Goldsworth) Beach, the third of 17 children. Julia moved to the local area more than 20 years ago and was a member of the Longview School District’s janitorial staff. She was a member of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD). The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Hook the Hawg” Salmon Derby on April 3-4. This will be the 3rd year for the derby. The event will take place at Elochoman Slough Marina. The “Hook the Hawg” Salmon Derby is a fundraising event for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised at this event help to provide a high school senior with a scholarship to attend a college, university, or trade school after graduation. OFF AND ON--The first day of Spring saw the skies "springing a leak" after several wonderfully warm days. The weekend started out with pounding rains which made the TV signal go out at times, so it was not a nice start to the day. However, it did wind up improving as the day went by. Sharon's Pizza and More of Cathlamet will join other restaurants and cafés in Wahkiakum and Cowlitz counties in donating part of their Saturday proceeds to the United Way. The day is called "Dine Out for United Way." The proceeds will benefit non-profit agencies in the two counties. The Cathlamet town council maintained a building moratorium, discussed a possible street vacation and acted on other business when it met Monday evening. Scott Espedal, owner of some lots in the Columbia Ridge Estates development off Glengate Loop in Rosedale, asked the council to lift a moratorium on building permits in a portion of the development. Longtime Cathlamet resident Margaret Burt celebrated her 107th birthday on Friday surrounded by friends old and new. "It took a long time to get here," she drily told a caregiver while she took in the festive scene. Burt moved to Cathlamet about 30 years ago, guessed friend Carol McLain.
