Negotiations for updates to the contract with Wahkiakum PUD to provide water for the Puget Island Water System are going well, Council Member David Goodroe said. A final agreement is nearly ready for approval, Goodroe said. After discussing...

GORGEOUS--Wow, have we had some nice "winter" weather or what? Last weekend was great and from what I hear, we should still be seeing sunshine by the time you read this, so we have been very fortunate. To top off those nice days, we've had some gorgeous sunsets as well; totally breathtaking! For those of us out here in West Valley, we have been having night time and morning temperatures below freezing. But compared to the 7-8 feet of snow that has accumulated back east in the last three weeks, and temperatures down to 20 below zero, I will cert...

  • Former mayor comments on water pact

    Feb 12, 2015

To The Eagle: After reading in The Eagle that the Town of Cathlamet had reached a water sale agreement with the PUD, I contacted Town Hall to get a copy of the new contract. To my surprise, I was told that a draft contract did not yet exist, that the contract wasn’t even on the last meeting agenda and that no documentation was provided to the public or to the town council before the decision was made. It also seems that the town agreed to join the PUD as a junior partner in a grant proposal to study creating a combined water system. It is time...

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 12, 2015

WET ENOUGH?--The end of last week was certainly a drenching and as this work week begins, it's pretty doggone wet too, but the break on Sunday at least allowed for some of the "lakes" to recede a bit, thankfully! For us, it's supposed to be all cleared up by the time you read this and they say we'll be in for a week or more of sunshine, with temperatures close to 60 degrees, so that sounds mighty good to me! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Feb. 12-18 are Vickie Reid, Chuck Parker, Derek Phipps, Connie Shrum, Dale Strueby, James...

Betty Brown's home, just before the ferry landing, was on fire. Brown woke slowly despite the persistent barks of a service dog named Sparky and the repeat of the smoke alarm. She wandered down the hallway to discover a fire at her kitchen table. "I tried to put it out," Brown said, "but it just got bigger." Brown ran...

  • Donations sought for children's theater

    Feb 5, 2015

To The Eagle: My name is Shawn Deal and I need your help. At this moment there is to be no Missoula Childrens Theatre coming to our school district this year. Unfortunately, the funding for this wonderful program does not exist for this year. Hopefully, this is only a one year problem. For the past 20 years, The Missoula Children’s Theatre has given our school district a much needed drama program. Not only have they put on a play in the course of a week, they also come in to teach classes at the grade and middle schools. I have had the p...

  • Confusion cleared up about community center name

    Feb 5, 2015

To The Eagle: Apparently there’s been some confusion on two points regarding the Community Center in Cathlamet. And apparently I’ve contributed to that confusion. I’m sorry, and I’d like to set the record straight. First problem: Is this facility properly called the “senior” center, or is it the “community” center? Or are there two separate facilities? Answer: It’s all one place, and it is the Community Center. The confusion stems from our morning schedule, which we have called the “senior center,” to differentiate these activities from our a...

It was also perfect for those who stood in line waiting for the doors to open of Rosburg Hall where the folks who were hungry for crab and oysters were treated to another delicious feast. The oysters were just the right size and for the most part, were easy to open, and when you topped off the meal with a little dessert, well, it was a fantastic meal! Kudos to those who put the meal on and worked the event as well. It's alw...
