Cathlamet is going to be seeing a new business next door to the Eagle very soon--Cysciborg Holdings. Jerald Meiers and his wife Ladonna moved to Cathlamet last September from Bakken, North Dakota. With him comes “Steampunk Art” which is a unique, creative movement that has been growing in popularity using anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. In time it was stored at the Altoona Cannery and remained there till the cannery was not stable enough to support it. It was then moved to the Port District’s storage shed at Vista Park. In the last few years, it has been at the f...

All that practice brought Erickson, Steve Sharp and Andy Lea to where they are now, with doors wide open to the newly constructed brewery in the marina, 10 investors behind them, and dreams of contributing to the local community before them. “We don’t expect to see a return for two or three years,” Erickson said. “We want to take everything and put it back in the brewery, but mostly we want to do...

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils. They are so much fun to watch, and their colors so brilliant. Country life is the only way to go, and welcome to Spring. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for...

He just wanted a part time job. He was taking classes at LCC and needed a little spending money. So when Skamokawa resident and Wahkiakum High School graduate Treasure Collupy heard about a guy with a glass blowing studio, he thought to himself, “Why not? I’ll just go over there and see if he needs some help keeping the shop clean.” Treasure was in for a surprise. The guy was glass artist Kyle Gribskov. He was working on a big glass piece, and his assistant was late for work. “Hey kid! Gribsko...
Nine-year-old Liam Jaussi was just five when his parents found out he had a tumor the size of a fist in his brain. Since his surgery, he’s had one recurrence. He gets a check up every six months, so he and his family can keep the cancer at bay. Poised and at ease, Liam spoke to students at an assembly to kick off Doernbecher Week at the Wahkiakum School District on Friday. And like any kid his age, he seemed unmoved by the excitement and took off in a tear around the gym with his sisters and f...

It was a desire to see The Spirit of Chief Wahkiakum trolley remain in the community that first motivated Cathlamet residents Christine and Jon Randall to volunteer to commit their time and energy to increase interest in the use of the vehicle. The Randalls, who work in the marketing field, are hoping to instill a feeling of ownership and pride among local residents for the vehicle that originally wound its way up and down the hills of San Francisco. In need of drivers and ideas, the Randalls ar...
To The Eagle: Commercial marijuana farms in Wahkiakum County? Who will pay for this obvious, attractive nuisance? The taxpayers of Wahkiakum County, through a sheriff’s office who does not have enough deputies to cover 24 hours a day. Any such operation should be looked at from more than it’s a new income to the county. We must think of the additional security these farms would absolutely require. Wherever these farms are located, any operators must be required to pay for any additional security needed by the sheriff. We cannot use our pat...

WET AND WILD--We sure had a couple of days last week that were opposite of each other, as Friday was gorgeous and we were running around in shirt sleeves, while it was nothing but rain and wind on Saturday. By Sunday morning, the water was just going over the edges of West Valley road, so we're glad it let up when it did. As of this writing, many "lakes" are still visible as the ground is so saturated that it's not going anywhere too fast, so we'll hope for clearer skies this coming week as promised so that we get to see our "green" again!...

STORMY--It sure depended on where you were as to how good or bad it was last week. Last Friday was gorgeous here while Portland was dealing with a lot of rain. Those in the eastern part of the Columbia Gorge felt a winter blast with horrific thick, icy road conditions, while just west of Multnomah Falls, it was just wet. Last Monday it was blowing and raining here in West Valley, while it was sunny and warm in Longview, so if you travelled less than an hour in just about any direction, you were likely to find a different batch of weather....
