We have had an almost wonderful visit with our nephew and niece from Yucca Valley, California this past week. I say “almost” because our well decided to give us some problems. Fortunately, my nephew Mark is a plumber, so hopefully we will have no more issues when he returns home at the end of the week. Actually, by giving him a hand, I have learned a few things as well. “Storytime” at the Grays River Valley Library will continue on June 28 at 10 a.m. for your tots. Age appropriate stories will be read with your child. I’m told we will have...

There was lots of lawn mowing and haymaking during that dry spell and with the recent rain soak I’m sure the grass will be growing twice as fast so we can do it all over again. Many in our community took the opportunity to stop in and visit with Bob and Bev Paul during the last few days that the Grays River Café was open, and to wish them well in their new ventures. They have served our community well (literally) with the delicious food that was prepared and served at our local café, and they will be missed. You always felt l...
Library customers can now return books and movies any time of day or night rather than waiting until the library is open. Thanks to local residents Michelle and John Wisner, Cathlamet Library has a like-new book return. The Wisners completely overhauled the old red box by repainting it, removing rust and dents, repairing the interior mechanisms and making a new cushion. A new box, which costs approximately $3000, was not in the budget. The library is open Tuesday and Friday from 2-5 p.m. and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1-4 p.m. The...
The American Red Cross has scheduled a blood donation event for Wednesday, June 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Hotel Cathlamet, 69 Main Street. During summer, blood donations typically drop off dramatically as donors go on vacation and schools close, but the need for blood never takes a holiday. The American Red Cross urges people to donate blood or platelets and save lives this summer. Patients in area hospitals served by the Red Cross depend on community blood donations every day. Every day, the Red Cross distributes blood to patients in local...
It’s back to work on building a brewery at Cathlamet’s Elochoman Marina. After rejecting bids from an earlier round of bidding that were higher than expected, Wahkiakum Port District No. 1 commissioners have gone to bid again with a revised scope of work. Drop Anchor Brewery, LLC partners provided an update to the original scope of work which they requested for constructing the 36-by-40 foot building which they plan to lease from the port. The commissioners reviewed the document with Port Manager Jackie Lea when they met June 6. “They have take...

It looks like we will get a few raindrops in the next couple of days, but it certainly has been nice weather for the past week. After breaking a belt on my lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, and only completing half of the yard at that time, it looked like I would need to bring in the hay equipment to cut the rest of it. Finally the new belt arrived (I bought an extra to have on hand) and thanks to neighbor, Dirk Heitsch it was replaced in a matter of minutes. Several hours later, I had a mowed yard again and a cold brew to celebrate. Now if the...

This year the pool will be open one hour less dur...
To The Eagle: There are individuals who have contributed their time, their energy, and their lives for students and athletes in our community. In particular, Nick Vavoudis, one of WHS’s golf coaches, has shown student athletes what hard work and dedication can accomplish in and beyond the classroom. As a former golf team member and pupil of Mr. Vavoudis, I wish to show my appreciation to the man that has positively influenced our community and specifically, our high school. In the spring of 2009, in only its third year, the golf team gained M...

Wahkiakum PUD’s electrical crew will soon have a new bucket truck to use when working on overhead power lines, the utility’s commissioners decided at their Tuesday morning meeting. The expenditure was originally budgeted at $120,000. In addition to the bucket truck, the utility also recently acquired a laptop and projector, which PUD Manager Dave Tramblie dem...
In a special meeting last Friday, the Cathlamet Town Council voted to replace the roof on the old town hall building and to authorize Mayor George Wehrfritz to negotiate a possible lease of the Broadway Dock to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Public Works Superintendent Duncan Cruickshank brought the roof issue to the council. Contractor Pacific Tech Construction is remodeling the building, and some of the work will require patching of the roof. This will leave mis-matched, old and new roofing, and leave the roof looking...

Editor's note: Cathlamet resident Jan Caliman recently completed a Mothers Day Bike Ride in North Carolina. Here's her story: Ridden By Jan Caliman I responded to an email from Woman Tours that said an angel wanted to pay for a mother/daughter team to ride the Outer Banks of North Carolina to celebrate Mother’s day. The instructions were to write an essay in 200 words or less (you’ve got to be kidding, I thought) why the angel should choose you. This is what I submitted: I had never been on a bike in my life until a few years ago. I had suffere...

To The Eagle: Regarding Patricia Rafferty’s letter in last week’s Eagle that was titled, “Reader suggests food banks explore merger,” I’ve had to address this issue so many times that I’m starting to sound like a recording, and feel like one too. Just one more time: Because both of our local food banks, as well as the St. Vincent’s distribution site at St. Catherine, have different sources of supply, any “merger” of these entities would result in losing some of our food and household goods suppliers. Wahkiakum County would end up with less. We...
To The Eagle: First I would like to thank Debbie Kuller for her letter to the editor two weeks ago wondering why the Drop Anchor Brewery did not choose an empty space on Main street Cathlamet. It has been wonderful that so many local citizens have supported our new business venture. First let me say we at Drop Anchor are very excited to bring this business to our community. We hope that we can add to our tax base, create a few jobs, and bring more visitors to our County. Debbie we looked at every building and open space in the Cathlamet area...
