  • Mayor decides not to run for re-election

    Apr 25, 2013

To The Eagle: I have decided not to seek a second term as Cathlamet’s mayor. Though I love the work and believe my time in office has been productive, family obligations require that I spend considerable time outside Wahkiakum County over the next few years. Our town needs a fully-devoted chief executive, and I am confident that our election process will produce one willing to meet the challenges. Contested elections are the lifeblood of our system. They introduce fresh ideas, bring new people into political life and give citizens a voice in go...

  • Lone ferry bid double the estimate

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 18, 2013

Wahkiakum County officials were disappointed Tuesday when county commissioners opened the only bid they received to build a ferry to replace the aging "Wahkiakum." The only bidder, US Fabrication, bid $8.5 million, which was more than double the expected cost. The marine engineering firm which designed the new ferry, Elliott Bay Design Group, estimated the cost at $4,335,000. Public Works Director Pete Ringen will have a recommendation next Tuesday for the board of commissioners. "Clearly this isn't the outcome we hoped for," Ringen commented w...

  • Council considers sign ordinance, fire sprinkler need

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 18, 2013

The Cathlamet Town Council handled a variety of business when they met Monday. Planning Commission member Jim Reed presented a report and recommendation from that board for updates to the town's sign ordinance. The recommendations in the document represent a lot of compromise, he said. "Not one person on this planning commission would have drafted this ordinance," Reed said. "We have different backgrounds . . . This became what we could all accept." The ordinance sets a limit on the size of signs, where they can be located, how much space they...

  • Adult family home owner deals with change

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 18, 2013

The one and only adult family home (AFH) in the county has been owned and operated by Puget Island resident Beth Lorenzo for nearly 17 years. An AFH can house as many as six clients, but Lorenzo prefers to keep her number at four to maintain her vision of “family home” in the AFH industry. Reliant on state income and embattled by the rising costs in sustaining a facility, one thing remains the same--Lorenzo’s concerns about being able to continue doing what she does best. “Every year I wonder...

  • It's tea time this Saturday at SJFC

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 17, 2013

DAMP--It seems that whenever my flowers bloom and are looking pretty, we get a heavy rain or hail storm or some strong winds and my poor flowers take a beating. Sure enough, that's what happened last week. My camellias were looking real nice, as was my red rhododendron, but after being pounded by the hail and tossed around by the wind this weekend, they are looking pretty sad and droopy. Even the hummingbirds would rather get some nourishment from my feeders than to deal with those soggy, droopy plants. We're hoping to see a little more sun in...

  • Busy week ahead in the county

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 11, 2013

BIG CHANGE--Last weekend was certainly a lot different from the previous one, as we were pretty much stuck in spring showers mode for a good deal of last week, with a tad bit of wind thrown in to boot. At least we didn't get the mini-tornado thing that hit parts of Pendleton and even Portland had some heavy wind damage too, so I guess having the rain wasn't so bad. With tulips in bloom, along with the daffodils, camellias and my one red rhododendren, it is looking like spring in spite of the weather, although those pounding rains did not make...

  • Writer urges support of building bond

    Apr 11, 2013

To The Eagle: Since we received our school board election ballot on Saturday the 6th, it’s time to fill it out with a positive approval and get it back to the auditor’s office in Cathlamet or South Bend. I want all of you eligible voters to remember that it was our parents and neighbors within our school districts nationwide that provided the schools we were educated in and now, ladies and gentlemen, it is our turn to return the favor. I want all of you to read what you are paying with the $8.1 million; your yes vote will provide and it will be...

  • Illegal dippers in Skamokawa?

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 4, 2013

NICE EASTER--In spite of Easter falling in March this year, and our March weather not really known for being all that great, it just so happened that this year, the Easter weekend was absolutely gorgeous and in some places, sent new records for their temperatures clear into the 80's! I saw lots of pink skin as everyone was sporting shorts and sleeveless tops and soaking up those rays, while they mowed lawns, washed cars or went fishing on the river. It was truly an awesome few days! As of Monday evening however, I felt the light rain begin and...

  • Sheriff's Report - April 4, 2013

    Eagle Staff|Apr 3, 2013

The Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office responded to two different rescue situations on Easter Sunday. Both involved the warm spring weather and the cold Columbia River. Shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a 45-year-old woman that was stranded on a piling in the Columbia River. She had been kayaking close to a jetty near the mouth of Birnie Slough in the Cathlamet Channel. The kayak sunk and the kayaker was left clinging to the jetty. Her companion lef...

  • Remembering the Holocaust, Part 1

Hans York, Wah. Co. Historical Society|Apr 3, 2013

(Editor's note: People around the world will pause this weekend to remember the Nazi Holocaust, which brought death to millions of people approximately 70 years ago. Although it was long ago and far away, the effects are felt today. Here are two stories, one local from Cathlamet resident Hans York, a retired deputy sheriff, and one from the East Coast by correspondent Christy Green that tell the stories of two families.) Kari Kandoll, historical society curator, has asked me to write about the Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, sundown April 7...
