Lifelong Cathlamet resident Jonathan Lewis Balch, 25, passed away on March 22 at a Vancouver Hospital. Jonathan was born on October 1, 1987 in Longview to Michael and Darlene (Hagedorn) Balch. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 2006. In 2012 he received a degree as a Medical Assistant from Concord Career College in Portland. A 12-person jury found that a former Cathlamet man is a violent sexual predator who should be detained despite having completed sentences for his crime. The State of Washington brought the detention action against Darrell Kent, 60, who had been convicted of sexual assaults against children in Wahkiakum County in 1996 and 2005. He completed his sentence in 2011, but the state argued that Kent hadn't changed and would likely offend again. The Wahkiakum Mule softball team defeated Naselle and lost a Central League match to Onalaska in action this past week. On March 13, the Mules outscored the visiting Naselle Comettes 13-5. Nina Lou Watson was born on July 9, 1931 in Argura, North Carolina to Mitchell and Sadie Melton. She passed away on March 16, 2013 at the Hospice Care Center. At age 16 she married R.O. Watson in 1948 and in 1960 they moved west to Cathlamet. Nina and R.O. loved their home on Puget Island, the river, and sharing it all with everyone who came there. Julie Anne Chamberlain was born on February 17, 1948 in Longview, Wash., to Russell and Connie Gorman. She passed away on February 28, 2013, in Bend, Ore., after living with MS for over 40 years.
