Wahkiakum Port District No. 1 commissioners gained land and tenants when they met Tuesday night. In addition to authorizing a lease agreement with Drop Anchor Brewery, LLC to site a brewery and tasting room on port property, the commissioners approved the acquisition of a lot owned by Wally Wright and situated along Third Street abutting port property. Wahkiakum PUD’s newly-constructed Cathlamet Substation has been in operation since January, and PUD staff and commissioners are ready to celebrate. Wahkiakum County officials were disappointed Tuesday when county commissioners opened the only bid they received to build a ferry to replace the aging "Wahkiakum." The only bidder, US Fabrication, bid $8.5 million, which was more than double the expected cost. The marine engineering firm which designed the new ferry, Elliott Bay Design Group, estimated the cost at $4,335,000. Planning Commission member Jim Reed presented a report and recommendation from that board for updates to the town's sign ordinance. DAMP--It seems that whenever my flowers bloom and are looking pretty, we get a heavy rain or hail storm or some strong winds and my poor flowers take a beating. Sure enough, that's what happened last week. My camellias were looking real nice, as was my red rhododendron, but after being pounded by the hail and tossed around by the wind this weekend, they are looking pretty sad and droopy.
