Five young people come to Cathlamet during the fall to join the Wahkiakum High School student population. They each come from cities that easily dwarf our little community. They are funny, bright and articulate. They are: Pedro Murashima Senior, Sao Paulo, Brazil; staying with Bill and Thelia Tawater. Pedro comes from a city of 11 million, a city in southern Brazil that “has more people than New York.” He misses the weather but he does not miss the noise, especially since the road to the air...

Seven to 10 hardy gardeners regularly brave the cold Wednesday mornings to work on putting the Community Garden in Erickson Park on Columbia Street in Cathlamet to bed for the winter. These workers, some who garden a plot of their own and some who just want to volunteer, have weeded, rototilled, carted garden waste to compost piles, refreshed pathways with shredded cedar shavings, and much more. Town of Cathlamet officials are struggling to find a way to pay for remodeling of the old town hall building. The town received two bids for the project, and the lower bidder, Pacific Tech Construction, came in at $369,957, which is $130,000 over the architect's estimate for the work. Council members discussed whether or not to accept the bid or how to pay for the complete cost of the project. They asked for further information and said they would make a decision at their January 22 meeting. The project calls for installing public restrooms...

Council members heard comment and commented on the appeal for 34 minutes but asked the town attorney to provide more information about variances...
To The Eagle: Ground breaking for the Empire State Building was in January, 1930 and ribbon-cutting took place in May, 1931, six months early and 30 percent under estimated cost. We used to build dams, bridges, skyscrapers and other immense projects in mere months from drawing board to completion. Now, building anything requires conferences, studies, a gazillion permits, and numerous lawsuits if the construction’s construed to threaten a three-toed toad or spotted spoonbill, or violate any of 347,288 (give or take) obscure and obtuse r...

Holiday crunch time is upon us, and we don't need any flooding! As I finish this up, it's blowing and nasty out. I hope we all keep our power as I'm pretty sure the ladies are in cookie making...
