Have you ever stood in an old cemetery and thought, "How I wish these gravestones could talk."? Well, here’s your chance! Bunker Hill Cemetery Association, Stella Historical Society and the Cowlitz County Historical Museum invite you to experience history as it comes to life in a unique and fascinating way. Bunker Hill Cemetery graves date back to the 1870s. The people were loggers, farmers, teachers and early settlers of the Stella and surrounding area. Enactors will portray some of those people while standing at their graves and share t...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council worked their way through an appeal of a sewer rate for a business, lifted a building moratorium and handled other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. Steve and Paige Lake, owners of the Bradley House, had appealed a town decision earlier this year to charge them a monthly rate of $276.58 based on an assessment of 2.8 equivalent customer units (ECU) because it was a residence doubling as an antique shop and bed and breakfast. The Lakes appealed, noting that they are open for antique sales very few...
A new shop, D's Art Antiques and Collectibles, opened on Main Street in Cathlamet last month. It's full of treasures collected by Dee Syfert-Subramaniam, who bought property in Skamokawa a few years ago. "I was into collecting for myself," she said. "I had an interest in antiques my whole life." When she was a teenager, she and her siblings found what she described as a "really cool table" at a thrift store on a military base. The three of them worked together to strip it down and refinish it....
To The Eagle: With an election just weeks away, I would like to implore the good people of Wahkiakum County to vote for candidates who are most qualified for the position. My experience in this county is that the most important requirement for landing a job or getting voted into office is how long you or your family have lived in the county; “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Matt Kuhl is running for Wahkiakum County auditor. He has the college degree and work experience to be your auditor. If this position was hired out, the minimum...
The Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners went over reports and discussed facility issues at last Thursday’s meeting. The port is down to one sewer pump after installing their spare. Hoping to avoid the same problem in the future, they have been considering the purchase of a sewer grinder pump. “I think we probably have time with the current system, it’s never been used before,” Assistant Port Manager Todd Souvenir said. “The challenge with waiting is if something happens, we’re in...
The Wahkiakum PUD Board of Commissioners held a quick meeting on Tuesday morning. Commissioner Bob Jungers asked to have a line item added to next year’s budget to allow for the acquisition of spare high side bushings for the transformer in Cathlamet as well as the new transformer planned for Grays River. “I believe that transformer is going to be designed to be seismic resistant but I would like to make sure that we are able to repair or replace the high side bushings and the risers for tho...
NIPPY--We started this work week with some low lying fog and the air temperature was in the 40s, so definitely on the cooler side. Once the fog lifted, it was a very nice, sunny begining to the week. Pleasant temperatures are supposed to be with us for a few days, like in the low 70s, so until the rain returns on Friday, we should have some nice days to enjoy. Now we can do all those things we forgot to do when it was dry, which we realized that needed to be done, once we went through those few days of rain. We had quite a bit of the wet stuff...

He also said he had seen the same two dogs chasing joggers. The deputy contacted a possible owner, who said that his dogs had been with him all morning. 12:10 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported a scam i...

When an anonymous donation was made to Tsuga Gallery to create new signs for historic homes and structures in the community, Cathlamet resident Paige Lake was more than happy to step up. “I was pretty excited that they let me take it on,” Lake said. Though an accountant by trade, Lake has long had an interest in architecture and the history of homes. “I’ve worked with historic preservation for several years,” Lake said. “I owned a building in downtown Centralia and I had an older home in Che...

A sign of fall? A heavy rain shower dumped on Cathlamet Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, regional timber companies announced that recent rainfall made it possible for them to re-open their timberlands. The weather will be cooler this week, too, with the National Weather Service predicting high temperatures in the low 60's for the rest of the week. Photos by Rick Nelson....
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voted to apply for an application for a grant to study the feasibility of creating a broadband network in the county. Government entities have had a committee studying creation of a broadband network, and last week, Wahkiakum PUD agreed to lead an application for the grant. The group had suggested Wahkiakum County has appropriate funding to provide the 25 percent local match, and PUD General Manger Dave Tramblie brought that request to the board of county commissioners. The maximum amount for the grant...
To The Eagle: In 1978, I had the pleasure of going to work in the Wahkiakum County Assessor’s Office. Iris Hedlund had been named the assessor, and she brought on Kathy Peek as her appraiser and myself as clerk. I served as clerk from 1978/1986. In 1986, Kathy left to be an appraiser in another county. Iris insisted I take the place of the appraiser. I was hesitant to do so, knowing how difficult the job could be. Time was spent going out with Kathy on many visits for property valuation. The job of appraiser meant schooling and training require...
To The Eagle: This is it, after two years of non-stop vilification, slander, and legal harrassment from the establishment, all they have is this: One, the president says mean things. Two, he doesn't act like the scripted presidents of the recent past. Three, they imagine that he will do something bad in the future. With 4.2 percent GDP growth, record employment (even, locally, Norco in Longview has added more jobs due to the policies of @realDonaldTrump and his administration). The good news for real people belies the nail-biting, bed-wetting...
To The Eagle: Sarcastic declarations of diminished intellectual capacity aside, I am baffled by my fiscally astute neighbor, Howard Brawn's, disingenuous assertion that he "has no clue as to who is getting fleeced" by the Trump misadministration. Here are a few of those clues. Let's consider how the middle class and poorer taxpayers will now be shorn. The Republican tax "reform" package is the most egregiously immoral, ravenously greedy, singularly heartless transfer of wealth from the middle and low income classes to the wealthy that this...
To The Eagle: Last week’s letter about the experience levels of all the other assessors in surrounding counties is very interesting. Why should Wahkiakum County be the only county in SW Washington with an assessor who has no certifications and no training in real estate appraisal? Brian McClain’s lead in the primary is concerning to me. People are ignoring his lack of qualifications. He promises he’ll get certifications, but the kind of experience and training he’ll need to be competent doesn’t take just weeks or months. And of course, t...
To The Eagle: I met Sheriff Mark Howie when the then-Sheriff John Dearmore brought him onto the sheriff’s office while trying to restore our sorely depleted sheriff’s office. When we were down to four deputies and down a corrections officer, and had no emergency manager for our county, Sheriff Howie pulled every available string for funds including state monies. We now have six deputies and a full staff in the 911/corrections center. For years we had no realistic night shift; a deputy had to be called out thus amassing a horrible overtime exp...
DAMPNESS--We began this past weekend with just a slight bit of wetness falling, and while it wasn't much, it was most welcome. We managed to dry out again on Sunday but then we got some more rain drops on Monday, which really soaked things pretty good. Forecasters say we have more coming our way this week, so I'm sure those with drying up springs and parched lawns will be quite happy, although it will take some getting used to after all the lovely days we've enjoyed. Now if we could only get some decent rainfall amounts over those areas that ar...
