Wahkiakum PUD commissioners met Tuesday to discuss proposed rate increases for electrical and water customers, to review the 2012 preliminary budget and to award bids for portions of the electric substation project. At recent meetings, Manager Dave Trambie had outlined his request for a 9 percent rate increase for electric customers. Cathlamet town government leaders announced Monday that they're taking steps to resolve issues about management of the Cathlamet Fire Department. The department has been the focus of state auditors in the past 12 months, and Mayor George Wehrfritz has taken steps to take over management of the department, which has been operating on a 1932 ordinance that puts management of the department under control of the former Cathlamet Commercial Club. The position would be responsible for developing emergency response plans for the county and for coordinating the county's response in emergencies.
