The Wahkiakum County Eagle - Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

A fund raising event to benefit our local 4-H Clubs is happening this weekend! It’s called Columbia River Country Days and is presented by Friends of Extension and Wahkiakum County 4-H. This is the famous dinner that is set up inside the Grays River Covered Bridge. How unique is that? Be sure to get your ticket at the Bank of the Pacific or the WSU Extension Office for this special dinner before they sell out. Share a delicious dinner with friends and you will also be supporting the 4-H Clubs in our area too!

Did you cash your fair check yet? Don’t forget! Fair checks have to be cashed before the end of October. I will keep reminding you each week!

We had a great group of volunteers organize and run the Silver Buckle Game Show during our 2011 Fair. I asked for help and these people stepped forward: Tammy Mansur, Shawn Merz, Tina Merz, Joni Matthews, Lois Wakefield, Valle Ledtke, Azery Gribskov, Jennifer Leach, Ramona Leber, Jade and Susan Junnikula, Tori Stripp, Michelle Wilson and Tony Mansur. I would love to have this same crew at our next game show! This was a seven hour event that brought lots of spectators into the arena to watch the action. A big thank you to these great volunteers and their willingness to support a fund raising event for our fair.

I need a Superintendent for Open Adult Floral for our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair. The flower exhibits make the whole T-building look and smell so nice during each Fair. If you love flowers and are interested please contact me at 795-3434 and I can fill in the details and time it takes to do this volunteer superintendent position in the T-building.

We have a new community garden coordinator, her name is Carol Geil, she has lived in our area for about a year and a half. She and her husband Walt, have been hauling load after load of straw from the Fair's cow barn to the community garden in Cathlamet. Carol started her winter plans for the garden last week, using the straw the Fair is providing, to cover the garden up until the spring planting season. I appreciate the hard work Carol and Walt have done already and look forward to seeing the community garden next summer. I will be looking for vegetable exhibits from the community gardens at our 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair.

I still have straw to give away at the fairgrounds. Covering your garden with straw mulch now will make it easier to garden next year. This straw is seed and weed free. You will be able to get your garden started earlier next year, just pull the mulch back and plant your seeds. Give me a call if you can use some straw.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is October 12, 7 p.m., location to be determined. The public is always welcome to attend.
