As community meetings went, Monday's town council meeting wasn't too bad. Sure it lasted almost three hours. The hot part, though, was the first two hours in which citizens generally criticized Mayor George Wehrfritz for his handling of proposed changes in management of accounts of the Cathlamet Fire Department and its First Aid Division. For the most part, discussion was fairly civil; only once did the crowd shout someone down. "You're smearing our reputations," the crowd told the mayor. He should have handled the issues more diplomatically, t...

Officers of the Cathlamet Fire Department are becoming locked in a battle with Mayor George Wehrfritz over who will control the department. They also planned to merge the department's Emergency Medical Services Revolving and Cumulative reserve funds, one of which has been operated on a private account by Assistant Chief Bill Faubion, fire department treasurer, since...

What a difference a year makes. In November, 2009, people around the world were preparing for a pandemic outbreak of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu. After an outbreak in Mexico, public health officials scrambled to develop a vaccine for the strain and get it to vulnerable individuals. This year, said Dr. Jennifer Vines, Wahkiakum County health officer, there have been no major outbreaks of any flu strain; the H1N1 vaccine is included in the seasonal vaccine, and it is available for all who wish to be vaccinated. "There's not a lot to...
To The Eagle: Now that our elections are over, I can say what I want to say without being accused of "thumping" for one candidate or another (by golly, I am sick of this election!) I am motivated to write this letter to the editor after hearing for the third time in recent weeks a Cathlamet person say, "I don't think I can afford my medication." I am, I think rightly, upset when I hear people that I view as responsible, normal citizens of various ages state that they cannot afford medications for diseases such as heart trouble, diabetes, and...

WET AND NASTY--We are still seeing heavy rains and nasty weather, but that was nothing compared to the weekend storms that rolled through the area; not fit for man nor beast out there! I don't remember when we've had that long of a thunder and lightning event, but it was pretty spectacular. With a foot of snow in the mountains already and a couple of more feet expected, you may need to rethink any travel plans across the passes; keep the chains in the trunk and your emergency kit stocked up as well. If this is a sign of the winter to come, it...

We still need to add more dirt, sand and sawdust , then spend many hours driving tractor to get it just right. Before you ride, please spend a little time removing rocks from the arena. We have placed two big cans in the arena for riders to put the rocks into. If there is a 4-H club that could help remove the rocks please call me and we can pick a day...
