To The Eagle: You may not be aware but the Elochoman Grange is on the verge of disappearing. For some, the Grange may be a place that brings back memories of social functions, bake sales, dinners and more. For others, there may be sense of mystery; not really knowing what it's all about. For me, the Grange is a big unknown. I have no history with the Grange -- I didn't know much at all until I attended an informational meeting and was given some material to read. But I knew it had something to do with farming, and families, and community. It's...
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to make up my mind on the proposal to form the Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area and include Wahkiakum County in it. Business organizations throughout the region requested the formation of the NHA as a means of creating an internationally recognized brand for the area that could be used in marketing. The idea came out of the coalition formed in the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. Over the years, The Eagle has had occasional stories about the movement, but they've been few and far between because...

She, along with husband Mike, own Skyline Golf Course in Cathlamet. “We want golf to be a family event,” said Mary. “The sport is a lot like life in that it has success and failures and it’s a great learning tool for parents to teach their kids about fair play, dedication and hard work.” The Remers moved to Cathlamet six years ago when they bought the nine hole golf course behi...

NorthernStar Natural Gas, LLC, announced Tuesday afternoon it is suspending its attempt to site a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Bradwood, Ore. “The extended delays in the processing of state and federal permits for Bradwood Landing and the difficult investment environment have forced us to suspend development,” NorthernStar President Paul Soanes said in a press release. “In particular, the challenging regulatory environment gives investors pause, especially considering that Bradwood Landing would have such a positive impact on the Nor...
To The Eagle: What is a National Heritage Area? Is it a historical area? Is it a specific zoning area? What does it hope to accomplish and by what means? Who will administer it? What is the time frame to opt out and how? Most of the areas that fall into any of the above are usually administered by someone outside the affected area, that is, a board, (non-elected) who is based in another area with more population. The usual targets for historical and heritage sites are to restrict any development through the permit process. They will try and...
Death by 1,000 cuts was the way one opponent of NorthernStar's proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant described his group's strategy. It seems to have worked, for NorthernStar announced Tuesday afternoon it is suspending the project because of delays in permitting and "the difficult investment environment." Groups such as Wahkiakum Friends of the River and Columbia Riverkeeper opposed the plant every step of the way, saying the environmental and community safety concerns outweighed any economic benefit of the plant. While...

SAW THE SUN--Between the rain and the wind, we did see some sun last week and as this week began, it was nice all day Sunday. However, with rain coming in for the rest of the week, it looks like the rain coats and boots will be staying by the door. The heavy rains and strong winds on Monday afternoon made it miserable and seemed to chill me to the bone; with plenty of rain on Tuesday, it was still a time to huddle by the fire. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 29-May 5 are Shannon McClain, Connie Luthi, Wally Wright, Marcia M...

HALF NICE--I think Saturday took a lot of us by surprise, as we'd heard there was just a chance of a shower. Well, beings it rained a good deal of Friday night and almost all of Saturday, it was not a picnic pleaser by any means. It was great to see the sun return on Sunday though. The rains did not seem to slow down the traffic on SR 4, as clam season and fishing season were in full swing. With tides just right the beaches were full and the boats were thick at the Cathlamet marina and elsewhere. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthda...

National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, is held annually to acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organizations. It began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting volunteering. A Gallup survey for the Independent Sector found that 44 percent of adult Americans volunteer an average of 3.6 hours per week. Washington State University Extension in Wahkiakum County is proud to have 30 adult 4-H...

Artist Mitzi Christensen isn’t a Northwest native. Moving to Cathlamet in 2001 from Hawaii, she said she was drawn to the area after a friend recommended she and her husband explore the area. Mitzi grew up in a small town in Northern California and has lived in Monterey, Santa Barbara and Oxnard, California before finally moving to Hawaii, where she and her husband lived for 20 years. Mitzi may be a transplant but her art proves she has the soul of a Wahkiakumite. Her art is all about water, b...
WAS NICE--We had a pretty nice weekend, although there was rain in the middle of the night on Saturday, but that was okay because it was sunny during the daylight hours and that's all that mattered to most of us. But now the work week has begun and so did the rain. It's this kind of weather that makes things grow like crazy, unless they drown! Let's hope we see the return of the sunshine real soon! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 15-21 are Janine Helms, Bryan Ledtke, Dan Keilwitz, Lori Smith, Floyd McClane, Brock Cothren,...
