Erickson Park in Cathlamet is getting a facelift. Jerry DeBriae Logging has contracted with the town to remove excess brush, fallen trees and branches and invasive plants that have overgrown in the area over several years. The removed debris was transported to the 4.7 acres the town recently purchased from the school district. A controlled slash burn will be conducted at a later date. The board voted to split a detailed section on economic development from the plan and use it for an updated county economic plan. The Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars Non-Traditional Scholarship committee has announced the recipients of their 2008 scholarships. Thanks to a generous donation from the John C. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund and an anonymous donor, the group was able to fund six scholarships. Scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to Erynn Grasseth, Rachael Gerlach and Sean Reichert; a $500 scholarship was awarded to Phillip Most. Erik Schillios and Brenden McClain were awarded $250 each. In a 2-1 vote, the Cathlamet Town Council voted to appoint former Mayor and Councilmember Bob Rendler to fill a vacant seat on the council. The Cathlamet Town Council interviewed two applicants to fill a vacant seat on the council last night (Wednesday) after The Eagle had gone to press. Mayor Dick Swart said Tuesday that the council might appoint one of the persons to fill the vacancy; he had originally suggested the appointment be at the council's next regular meeting next Monday. Changes in salmon management practices will bring much change to Wahkiakum County starting this fall. The Elochoman Salmon Hatchery will be closed, and the Elochoman and Grays Rivers will become refuges for naturally spawning salmon. The 27th Annual Bald Eagle Festival kicks off tomorrow with activities to last all weekend. The first annual chalk art contest will take place on Broadway Street by Wright Pro Hardware from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The cost is free for participants and the chalk will be provided.
