News from Naselle: Hearts are heavy in our community as the Rob Dalton family lost a precious wife and mother, Elizabeth Dalton. She passed away on Friday, February 16 while vacationing with her husband in Hawaii. To the Eagle: After reading the reactions about the proposal to sell cannabis in the Rosburg Store, I'm very disappointed in the board of commissioners of Wahkiakum County Fire District No. 2's logic when they opposed the application. They stated that the store is near a park and a school bus stop, and felt commercial activity at the store could create dangerous traffic situations. It looks like Mother Nature has decided to cooperate with the calendar and as I complete this column I watch big puffy snowflakes falling outside and actually sticking to the ground. The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on February 20 in Middle School Commons. The board approved the hiring of Robert Baker as head track coach and Scott Smith as assistant track coach. The board acknowledged the resignation of Greg Nelson as middle school track coach. The Naselle Comets boys basketball team lost to Taholah 68-58 for a second place district finish on Saturday. Neck and neck for most of the game, the Comets were up by one at the end of the third quarter. That’s when Taholah got hot, pouring in 26 points for Naselle’s 15 in the fourth. Local school districts received support from voters in Tuesday's special levy elections. Voters said yes to a four-year $997,000 levy to support education at the Wahkiakum School District. The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District educational and operations levy passed on Tuesday with a combined Pacific-Wahkiakum vote of 340 for and 165 against. Preston Daniel Torppa died suddenly and unexpectedly on February 3, 2018, due to a rare keloid cyst in his brain. Preston was born in Naselle to Donald and Teresa Torppa on April 18, 1987. Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to support creation of the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Economic Development District. Five years in the making, the district would develop a regional economic development strategy and find funding to help implement the strategies.
