The Naselle Comette Volleyball Team has been picked as the number one seed for the SW Washington District 1B Volleyball Tournament. The Comettes defeated the Washington School for the Deaf 25-11, 25-10, 25-15 on Tuesday. The Comettes will travel to Black Hills High School, Olympia, to play Mary M. The Wahkiakum Mule 2014 football season came to a close in a 46-21 loss to the Toledo Indians last Thursday. The Mules had a bright start; they dumped the Toledo ball carrier for a four-yard loss on the game's first play from scrimmage. However, on the second play, the Toledo runner took off for a 63-yard touchdown. A conversion kick gave the hosts a 7-0 lead at 11:15 of the first quarter. Mary Grant Cameron was born in Glenlivet, Scotland, 93 years ago. She traveled from the moors of Scotland to the Pacific Northwest in 1947 to marry Walter Kandoll. Walt and Mary settled in Deep River, Washington, where she remained for over 60 years. After the tradition of naming cottages in Scotland, Mary chose the name Millcroft for her Deep River home. Elna Vivian Browning, of Longview, died September 23, 2014, the day after her 96th birthday. She was born in Naselle on September 22, 1918 to Henry and Martha Wirkkala. She grew up in the Deep River area along with her 10 siblings. She started cleaning houses at an early age and later worked at the oyster cannery.
