A birthday reception honoring well known historian, Carlton Appelo, is scheduled for May 10th at the Appelo Archives Center at 1056 SR 4 in Naselle. The reception will be held from 11 am to 3 pm in honor of his 92nd birthday. Carlton has been a successful business man and is still President of the Wahkiakum West Telephone Company in Rosburg. After the nice few days, the weekend turned into another wet one. Our son, Carl and his girlfriend Dion were here for the weekend from Seattle as well as other son, Shane. They had hoped to get some dry hiking in but that didn’t pan out, so they took the dogs for a damp one. The Wahkiakum Mule Track team traveled to Naselle on April 22 to compete in the Comet Invite. The boys scored seven points and came in 10th place out of 10 teams. The girls were able to place sixth out of 11 teams with 64 points. Grace Peacock took third in the 100 meters with a time of 13.63. Spring is definitely in the air with the smell of cherry blossoms, fresh mown grass, and many of the wildflowers beginning to bloom. The dogs are shedding their winter coats, and if you brush them outside and leave the fur, the birds are in a mad rush to pick it up and carry it off. Joanne Marie Chapman, who loved to be called Jo, was born in Longview on October 2, 1970 to parents Ken Chapman and Sonja Kruse of Rosburg. Joanne passed away peacefully March 18, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center with her family by her side. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I had found my first trillium. Well, on my walk with the dogs yesterday, I hit the jackpot. There must have been 300 trilliums in one little area of our woods. They were just beautiful, and I had never seen so many, so I picked my first bouquet to enjoy in the house. The hummingbirds are back in full force and they sure are hungry little devils.
