I hope everyone kept their feet dry last weekend after the amount of rain and wind we ended up with. Our son and his girlfriend were here for the weekend but made an early exit on Saturday night in order to get out before we were flooded in. It didn’t last very long but was sure fast coming in. Looks like more silt building up in the pastures, and more pot holes to fill. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week include: Tuesday, the 18th-fast pitch and baseball at Ocosta at 4 p.m., Thursday, the 20th-fast p...

Spring seems to be almost here, frogs singing, hummingbirds are back, daffodils are blooming and the buds are causing the trees to turn a different color. I haven’t been able to find any trilliums yet, though. At least our weather seems to have been much milder than that of the rest of the country, so I guess we really can’t complain. Commissioners agreed to write a letter to the...
Just when you think the worst is over as far as storms are concerned, here comes another one with lots of rain. This time it has filled our field to the brim and Lake Fred is back, great for the ducks but not for driving in or out the driveway. Looks like we are in for a couple of days. The dogs are happy campers, as they like to hunt the mice that climb the trees. It’s almost like picking apples off the tree. Unfortunately they come in with wet and muddy feet. Oh well, I guess that’s why we live in the country, and I wouldn’t trade it for a...
What happens when a nation of nearly only a million residents takes on the mighty Soviet Union in the late 1980s? What do you use when you have no army or weapons? What role can singing play when a nation is faced with annihilation by its neighbors? Those questions are answered in a 2008 documentary by James and Maureen Tusty. "The Singing Revolution" will be shown on Saturday, February 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Appelo Archives Center, 1056 SR 4, Naselle. There is no admission charge. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania had been occupied for more...

Since I didn’t have to go anywhere during the snowy days we have had, I took the opportunity to enjoy what little accumulation we had. It was a beautiful sight with the snow causing the tree branches to hang almost to the ground, heavy with the white stuff. We were the lucky ones though, I think. All around us it was pretty scary, especially if you had to drive. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the coming week for the Comet teams: Friday, the 14th-middle school boys basketball with South Bend in Naselle at 5:45 p.m. Go Comets! Last F...

Is it winter yet? They say maybe some rain and cooler temps the rest of this week. We can certainly use a little rain, as the grass and brush is not as fire proof as it could be. It looks like someone on Covered Bridge Road found that out the hard way. Fortunately, not much damage was done, only grass and a couple fence posts. Take precautions with fire, no matter what the season is. News from Naselle: I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Christmas Party (yes, that’s right) for the employees of Okie’s Select Market last Sunday eve...
BRR--Here in West Valley, we still know it's winter time as it's been freezing at night and with the fog rolling in upon us in the evening and morning hours, we wind up with "freezing fog" that definitely makes things white with frost and slick to boot, not to mention, cold! Even though the sun looks nice, you'd best not be strutting outside without a warm coat the first half of the day, as in spite of that bright orb in the sky, it's still not too warm out there. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from January 23-29 are Sharon...

WCN hired Sealund in 2003. It started out as a part time position but soon grew into full time work. The same thing happened with her part time job at the PUD. Before she knew it she was working 60 to 80 hours a week, committed to two jobs that brought her a lot of joy...

BRR--As this week begins, it is mighty cold outside and everything is sparkling with a thick white layer of frost. The forecasters assure us that this is going to be short-lived and we'll be back to rain by the time you read this and that will be fine with me. There were a few folks who woke up to frozen pipes again and no water so I'm sure they'll be more than happy to see it warm up. Considering the arctic blast that is still hanging around the Midwest and East coast, I'm grateful we're in the 20s and not in the minus 20s with a foot or more...
