Nancy M. Larson, 90, of Naselle, joined Jesus in Heaven on February 18, 2012, succumbed to a short bout with cancer. She was surrounded by her family at her bedside. She was born to Charles and Anna (Wirkkanen) Bighill on November 14, 1921. She attended Naselle grade and high schools graduating in 1939. She was swept off her feet by the handsome Vernon Larson of Rosburg, who was her husband for 48 years until his death in 1990. She moved back to Naselle where she lived the rest of her life. They had 2 sons: Keith Larson of Warrenton, Ore. and...

Yup, spring is almost here. The baby lambs at Georgene Scott’s are romping and jumping happily in the fields on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. The frogs are still singing merrily, and Derek Heitsch just stopped in to announce the arrival of his first calf of the season. A healthy 102 pound bull. New season, new life. I love spring. We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we...
Spring will surely be here in the not too distant future. The frogs are singing every night now, a sure sign. It seems like they are a little early this year. The daffodil plants are poking their stalks above the ground and eagles are perched in the trees along the Grays River waiting for an easy meal. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley sports calendar for the coming week: Thursday-first round playoffs for district tournament, girls basketball, to be announced. I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. She may have had to travel some distance to make it back home as she was quite emaciated, but is recovering nicely. I love to tell happy stories. Welcome home, Glory, and I’m happy to see you back with you...
Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. It looks like more is on the way, so guess I’d better do a little stocking up. My husband and I watched our dogs run down the hill from the house on Sunday and followed to see what they were after. Lo and behold, stuck in an icy pond close to the Grays River, was a sea gull. What a sight! He...

To The Eagle: Spanning several years of reading The Eagle, I have been introduced to and have come to admire the Finns of Wahkiakum from afar. I do have one Finnish friend, a retired medical assistant from Astoria, living near her family in Blaine. What do I conclude about these folks of Finnish ancestry? Well, they are perseverant, pragmatic problem-solvers, socially conscious, keen on preserving their heritage, and light-hearted towards music, dance, learning enjoyment and the arts. I might have guessed from the evolving computer center at...
What a gorgeous winter wonderland to wake up to this past weekend. I’m sure not everyone thought of it that way, especially if they had to drive to work. Walking in the snow always brings back childhood memories of growing up in Maine. The dogs are in heaven with all the white fluffy stuff to bounce around and roll in. The chickens—not so much. They seem content to stay in the warm henhouse, much like most of us humans who curl up in our warm homes. It looks like the weather will take a wet turn for the rest of the week and probably w...
We had a wonderful surprise visit from our daughter and son-in-law when they showed up on Saturday. They decided to make the trip to pick up some firewood and deliver a sample of some of their latest brewed beer. We certainly enjoyed the visit and the nice weather to boot. News from Naselle: If you don’t have one already, the Comet Booster Club birthday/anniversary calendars are available now. They can be purchased at the school in the district office, at Okie’s in Naselle and at the Rosburg Store for $4. A great way to keep track of bir...

The Mules defense played long and hard enough on Tuesday night to keep the team in the game until the offense decided to come out of its shell in the second half of a 66-49 victory over the visiting Kalama Chinooks. The Mules forced the Chinooks into 18 turnovers as they came away with 15 steals, six of those from sophomore Chris Bilgic. The Mule offense struggled to get going in the first half as they trailed 27-24 going into the break but came out from the half and posted a 23-point third quarter, capped off by a buzzer-beating three-pointer...

What a week! I hope all the readers had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did, as well as the few days prior to the holiday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. Wyatt is the second son for Shane and Delena, and he was eagerly hugged by big brother, Emmett, about an hour after he was born. Life is certainly a miracle. We headed to Oregon on Friday for the holiday and spent most of our time eating...
The Mules suffered their first loss of the young season last Friday night, taking the fourth-ranked Adna Pirates to the wire before succumbing to a 56-51 defeat. The two teams matched up well on paper, and it showed as neither team was able to build and sustain a lead in a back-and-forth game that was tied at the half and had the Mules leading after the first and third quarters by a point. With three minutes to go in the final frame, the Pirates managed to overtake the Mules and build what seemed to be an insurmountable lead at the time of six...

The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team gained two wins this past week. On Thursday, the Mules rallied in the second half to edge the Naselle Comettes 48-44. The two teams ended the first quarter tied 5-5. The Mules led 18-16 at halftime as Haylee Budd put in a shot at the buzzer. In the third quarter, Comette Carley Kitzman led a Comette surge that built a four point lead, but the Mules, sparked by freshman Sam Boyce, responded and led 31-27 at the end of the frame. The Mules built a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and held on for the...
The Wahkiakum Mules opened up their 2011-2012 basketball season Saturday night with a 33-point win over their KM Mountain rivals, the Naselle Comets. The Mules dominated the entire game both offensively and defensively enroute to a 66-33 win over the visiting Comets. Leading the way for the Mules were seniors John Chambers and Wyatt Parker, with 20 and 17 points respectively. Sophomore Chris Bilgic added eight points and four steals to lead an aggressive half court trapping defense that had the Comets turning the ball over and tossing up...
